Very interesting site with loads of geeky gadgets but what about import tax?
If you buy an item for £50 what sort of additional costs will you incur with postage and tax?
Anybody tried Question

Import / Customs:
Customs clearance paperwork and procedures are handled by the courier. They may need to contact you in certain cases to confirm details of a shipment. In any cases where additional paperwork is required for customs clearance, Chinavasion will assist you fully. Any local sales tax or import duty will be calculated when your goods enter your country: in most cases there is nothing to pay, but if there is, you simply receive a small surcharge bill when you receive the products.

Who knows?

As an example of how complicated the rules are: stills camera's attract a lower import duty than video recorders. Now we have DSLR's that also record video, they've said any camera than can record continuous video of 30 minutes or longer will pay the higher tax. That is why all the modern DSLR's limit single recordings to a maximum duration of 29'59" !!! - madness.

Having imported quite a bit of gadge over the years, I would say a lot depends on the courier used. They get charged whatever import duty is applied (it depends what type of goods are being imported) and then draw up their own invoice (including vat) to pass on to you. Some will also add on their own admin charge or whatever else they can get away with on the day.

I've found UPS to be the worst - they only accept cash on the doorstep and if you don't agree with their (take away the first number you thought of) invoice, you don't get your goods. FedEx seem more reasonable, especially if you have an account with them.

I would say in most cases there is always something to pay - you just won't know what it is!
