Does the brake fluid need changing at 3 years or is it just recommended?
One dealer includes it in its 3 year service and another doesn't!
I thought brake fluid was important and took on air as it aged so needed changing as a safety precaution?
Any ideas?

It 'should' be changed & I personally would change it, but it's a risk you take.
Some will tell of brake fluid that they've had in cars 10 years that has never been changed, but with 2.7t to stop, I wouldn't risk it! Bodsys Brake Bible

But in a nutshell yes you should change it , otherwise when you need it most it may boil and fade your brakes. As said you can run for years without changing it as long as you dont push the brakes. When its a real emergency or your going down a long steep hill is when you want them to work but when there at most risk.

Ok so it needs changing at 3 years which is good for me. £60 at the stealers or £30 at oily Tom's,

Rant mode on:
Why when I'm sitting here looking in the service portfolio does it say:
'Brake fluid MUST be completely changed at specific intervals' (optional on 3 year service at my dealers!)
Discovery/LR3 Every 3 years regardless of distance.
Now maybe I don't understand the word MUST but having looked it up!
'Being in a condition of dangerous frenzy, usually connected with sexual excitement; -- said of adult male elephants which become so at irregular intervals. -- n.
(a) The condition of frenzy.
(b) An elephant in must.
So my next question is, what has a sexual frenzy of an elephant got to do with my brake fluid?

Because if they included the cost of the fluid change in the 3 year service you would become

£30 at Toms, its not a difficult or time consuming task. Just make sure they use the right DOT fluid for the car.

It's not in the dealer rate because they quote 45,000 miles OR 3 year service schedule, if they included it in the service cost for 45,000 miles, you'd be paying for it whether you needed it / had it carried out or not...
Just make sure the independent knows how much fluid to flush through each circuit & includes the clutch circuit on a manual

It depends on the moisture content in the brake fluid that affect the efficiency. I use one of these to check whether fluid needs to be replenished.

Guys,
thanks for the replies. Next question is how much fluid does it need for a complete change and how much extra for flushing?
I know its DOT4 but is there any really good stuff that I can use as my wife and 4 kids are riding around in it and every little bit helps!

Woudln't you have to test the fluid in the lines not just the resevoir as the resevoir fluid is quite often newer as the fluid is topped up as brakes wear. Do you have to drain a bit from the calipers to test ?

I wouldn't top it up unless it's going below the low mark. Otherwisse it will overflow if you replace the pads. Roel
