BRAKE MAINTENANCE

Hi,

My Disco 4 2012 has 40.000 miles.

Today travelling to Italy I noticed that it doesn't brake much anymore. When I press the padal it takes a while to respond. It might need a coule of "pumping" before it responds with an energetic brake. Maybe a bit low in oil, but I guess mainly pads +/- discs wore out.
Moreover, but this is not new, I notices that braking at speed with low pressure on the pedal the steering wheel vibrate. I guess the disks are bent.

I will try to ge them changed here in Italy.

If I don't find genuine parts, do you think quality aftermarket parts are good the same? I can always put a first class shipping from uk tomorrow.

I noticed on Rimmer bros website that new genuine pads are extremely expensive!

Many thanks

Nic

When did you last change your brake fluid? Sounds like air in the system or old fluid that has absorbed moisture?

I think you need more than new fluid, if you are having to press the pedal a couple of times to get decent brakes, something has to much free play, ie seizing calliper/sliders, wheel bearing worn.

Pads and discs won't suddenly wear out.
Yes you may have a warped disc which could cause vibration but ultimately isn't the problem.
As Jim said it sounds very much like there is a problem with the hydraulic side of brakes, have you checked fluid? (In the black plastic box on left as you look at engine bay)
If not confident you really need a garage to take a look, brakes aren't to be taken lightly; they're fairly important Wink Thumbs Up

Shouldn't be on the road with brakes like that let alone going on a trip to Italy, now you have publicly announced you know that you have a fault on the brakes you will have no defence if charged with multiple man slaughter. Get them checked at a reputable garage ASAP.

Just had Geoff on here change my brakes to V8 and when the old ones came off, one of the sliders had seized with one pad almost down to the rivets and the other with plenty of friction material.

I had exactly your symptoms and advise if you have not yet replaced the brakes, change over discs and pads soon. short term, if discs are still OK. free up sliders and get new pads on it.

Braking now as should be, smooth and progressive.

Hi Thanks all for the advices, very helpful.

To be more precise and to reassure: THE CAR BRAKES FINE!

It just doesn't brake as well as it did, just about noticeble if you know the car well. The pedal has a bid of dead space before it becomes effective. If I pump it twice the dead space is gone.

Just to clarify:
1) I noticed it on the way otherwise I would have sort it before leaving.
2) I arrived at destination safely.
3) I care for my family, other car's passengers and myself. Taking care of other people is what I do for living Wink
4) The car is now booked in for a check at the local Land Rover Dealer on Monday Morning. Thumbs Up

Ciao everyone!

Nic

All sorted Very Happy

All in all it was the rear pads that were finished!
All others parts of the breaking system are in perfect working condition.
Funny enough on the way to the garage the warning light saying that the pads were over came out.

Thanks for your assistance.
Much appreciated.

Nic
