I had all 4 brake pads changed at a West Mids based main stealers today.
I was initially quoted £370.88 for the front pair and £356.12 for the rear, total £727  . Pads only. I replied along the lines that was far more costly than I was expecting, was therefore going to research disco4.com later, but from my recollection had it in my mind that the price would be around £400 at a main dealer.
Girl on the phone went away and spoke to the Parts Manager who said they would do all 4, all in for £391.86 which I accepted. All done now and billed £390.82!
Obviously far better than the price first quoted, but seems a massive potential markup to look out for and no doubt I've still probably paid OTT. Interested in other views and any other similar likely wear and tear negotiations to bear in mind please.

It's 7 bolts a corner, 5 of them is to get the wheel off.
With the brake bible it's a doddle.

I went to my local dealer recently (service at 28,500 miles / 11 months old).
They told me that the rear pads were worn to the metal and that the rear discs were also badly worn and would need to be replaced. They quoted £360.00 to replace rear discs and pads (plus another £20 to replace what turned out to be a completely perfect rear wiper blade!). I asked them to put it all back together and I'd look at it myself.
They phoned back, about 20 minutes later. Apparently, the technician had reported that they "should be able to get away with the discs and replace the pads only" for £158.00.
When I got it home, the discs were very lightly worn and the pads looked okay. I asked for some quotes and took it to ATS, for new rear pads and brake sensor cables, for which they charged me £80.00, including VAT and fitting. I was able to watch the guy do it. It's not difficult and he did a good job. I'd have done it myself once, but why begrudge them the work for £80.00?
I checked the rear pads and they all still had 4mm of pad material left, while the new ones had about 8 or 9mm. I've done a further 3,000 miles on the new pads and they are working just fine - completely silent, brake well, very little brake dust and the disc has no significant additional wear.
Make of this what you will, but I won't be trusting their "advice" again and their prices are off the scale  2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

What I have found with brake pads on trucks is the first half wears as expected and the second half can be anyones guess as the brake cant dissipate the heat so runs hot and the pads wear faster also the extra heat can damage other parts, so yes you can get extra miles out of them but with the extra parts it can cost more in the long run.
Car break pad wear for the mot from memory has to be the thickness of a 5p coin, so 4mm doesnt leave much room for error.
Its a simple brake set up fitted to many makes of cars so any local garage will be able to do the job for peanuts 1 hr per axle would be a good point to work from and thats if they are on a go slow

A 5p coin (at 2mm thick- I've just measured one), sounds about right. What annoyed me was describing 4mm as "down to the metal"! 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Maybe its to down to the long service intervals on newer cars so if the current brake pads wont make another 10k they say they are duff even if they are not to cover their rears, of course they could just be wanting your money!

I believe LR advise 3mm minimum for pads on my D3, new pads had 13mm, so 10mm of usable friction material . I had one dealer tell me my pads were 90% worn, with 6mm of pad left.
