Brakes help-issue

Hi All,

For while I have had a brake vibration. It was there when I git the car, all but disappeared after new discs and pads were fitted and now its back.

Its fine when cold or under "normal" use, but from higher speeds it vibrates through the wheel and pedal.

For example, on the way to work on Thursday, the A road I use was quiet and I was in a bit of rush, so overtook lots of lorries along the 57 mile journey, so quite a lot of heavy braking. The hotter the brakes got, the worse the wobble. On the way home driving gently, it was OK (teeny tiny vibration that I would not notice probably if I wasn't looking for it).

The car has had about a year ago new suspension arms, drop links and inner and outer track rods, so none of those should worn.

I just bought an infra red temperature "gun", and all discs are roughly the same temp after a drive, although I noticed the discs are cooler towards the outside (the furthest from the hub). I have no idea if that's normal or not!

Any advice appreciated.

Sounds like you have a sticky caliper. Most likely the reason you had to change the discs in the first place. If the caliper issue was not addressed at that point it will go on to destroy the new set of discs as well!

A sticking caliper causes hot spots on the disc which inevitably leads to the disc warping. This warping (buckled disc surface) becomes exaggerated the hotter it gets. Hence the distortion is felt through the caliper and right up to the pedal and the steering. In short you probably need new calipers, discs, and pads.

Apologies, but I forgot to say that I had new calipers 5k miles ago as well.

Vibration or pulsating brake?

I had pulsating brake on mine which you could feel through the pedal. Thought it may have been the fronts as the rear pads and discs were replaced when I bought the car.

Turned out to be the rears. Replaced with genuine pads and discs all round, pulsating gone. (Did fronts first / drove and then rears the next day)

Did the brakes have time to bed in? ie no heavy braking or prolonged use for a good 100 miles?
Discs take time to temper, and a new set of discs can be doorstops in no time if they're given a hard life.

Sitting with a foot on the brakes after braking will also lead to hot spots on a disc, so causing unveven sections: again felt as a judder.

I bought the TRW kit from Advance Factors, so no, not genuine.

Could that be the issue?

I bed them in following instructions on the web. A few braking sessions one after the other, not stopping in between.

I REALLY try not to keep my foot on the brakes when at lights etc, although its not always possible.

I get the steering wheel shake and can feel it through the pedal too. TBH, difficult to decide if pulsing or vibrating, although I would say pulsing.

I want to change the rears, but the whole complicated process of the EPC etc puts me off Sad

Just noticed AF dont sell the TRW kit anymore. Wonder if its because they were crap?

Genuine discs are not necessary. Some very cheaply made discs may well have the judder issue at an early stage in their life, but AF will not have sold you anything like that.
The larger LR factors generally stock good quality.

If you can do the fronts, then the rears will not cause you a probem.
Take a few photos of where all the springs are.. and study Body's brake bible. The rears just take a little longer. Once the EPB is in service mode, the rear shoes are old school manually adjusted brake shoes.

TRW are as good as any Thumbs Up but if you’ve been sat with your foot on the brake paddle after a spirited drive Whistle

I was never happy with the brakes on mine. Pulsating and hard with little feel through the pedal.

Father pjm-84 kept saying warped front discs and I kept saying rear pads are too hard / glazed . Hence replacing the front and then driving.

Brakes have been fine since and on par with my other more newer vehicles.


Rears are fairly simple to change and nothing to fear. Just respect them.

I had front discs from AF on my D3 though I can't remember if they were TRW. I then had judder when braking at around 50-70mph. Replaced with genuine and no more problems after that.

No reflection on AF - I still buy loads of things from them - but I'd hesitate to buy non genuine front discs again.

I have TRW disks on the front of mine front AF. I have genuine pads which I happened to get cheap off here, so used that combo. Had no problems with that setup, disks look fine still and no vibration / judder.

Doubt it’s disks.
