They won't be able to buy the slots for that 12 day period - that's months of work and negotiations to make that kind of change.
Buy perhaps 'buy' was the wrong word ...maybe let or transfer would have been better placed as I understand this can be done at short notice.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
I understood there was a little more too it than that, but assuming it is straighforward, there is the small matter of aircraft and flightcrew to consider. Or should BA lend these to their competitors too? At the lower rate of pay the other airlines pay?
Hey, you may be onto something here. If BA lease all their aircraft to their competitors and let their competitors pay BA staff their usual, lower rates..... it's crazy, but it might just work.
Idealism. Great in principleI know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

i'm interested do you HAVE to be an uphill gardener to work as cabin crew??
ahh the irony So now I'm being serious. Do you REALLY have to garden uphill?

All very interesting but in the current climate one has to be realistic - supply and demand (available jobs vs unemployed) is not ideal - so if the unions choose to ignore that little formula (which IMHO they usually do) then we'll all just sit back and watch them drive another organisation to the wall
Just my view - which is NOT the same as others Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Jeez, this thread had me reaching for my Thesaurus!
My view, for what it's worth is that I can see what's right about people wanting to stick up for what's they thinkis right but in this case I believe the BA workers have their rose tinted glasses on.
It all seems a bit "short term" to me. OK, they may keep their existing pay and conditions but given the current state of the economy, the competition they face from the likes of RyanAir/Easyjet, it's all very well having a job that pays a decent wage for the next few months but what will they do when BA goes bust 6 months down the line?
Seems to me the union should take a longer term view.
In my own particular business, I prefer to work for a client for "years" rather than rape them for all it's worth in the short term. I have worked for some of my clients for over 15 years.
With regards to the other airlines charging astronomical fares to cover the potential shortfall that may occur if the BA staff do strike, well, that's call "business" I'm afraid so tough.Welcome "Lola"

This isn't about the union not understanding the climate ...far from it ...afterall the particular union concerned represents 2 million working people in mulitple sectors ...they fully understand the requirement for change when needed and always wants to work to the benefit of all concerned . The problem arises when change is imposed rather than negotiated. As in this case.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

There's your answer
Sack all the BA staff who won't work and replace them with FlyGlobeSpan staff
