Broken lock key assembly on tow bar

I loaned my tow bar to a friend and he returned it to me broken after 6 months. Evil or Very Mad

My tow bar is the old style, LONG and has a BLACK KEY. I've been looking to see if I can replace this but a source or two say the green assembly with the orange key is not compatible with the old black key assembly.

Does anyone know if this is replaceable or am I screwed? Has anyone successfully replaced this assembly with a newer one?

Thanks.

All the replacements come with the orange key, there are two types, I think the one you need is KNW500010

Sounds promising so far. I'll reach out and have a conversation with an expert to make sure I get the right part if it's fixable.

Thanks for the feedback.

Maybe it’s just me but why don’t you outsource this problem to your ex friend? Shocked

I'm not outsourcing this to my friend because if you want something done right you need to do it yourself. Believe me, once I figure this out, he'll be paying one way or another.

Hi,

As mentioned there are two types but im not sure if they key is the way to tell. Mine came with bare metal long keys, but when it broke I the replacement had the short orange keys.

Its the pattern inside the green thing that dictates the type. Not sure how you know without removing it.

Good luck.

I got my replacement lock assembly on Friday and replaced it over the weekend. All is well and my lock works great. Now I've got TWO keys and they are the orange style.

As some of you had stated, there are two types of lock mechanisms based on the type of tow hitch. For USA there is the Long style (old) and the Short style (newer).

I ended up going to the dealer and telling him to order this part for me. It's surprising how little these guys know about their own parts. The parts guy didn't know you could order this part separately from a new hitch. They had never ordered this part before, ever.

The old Long style uses part # KNW500010 which looks like this:

The old style lock assembly is smooth on the inside, whereas the new style has stepped teeth. So, it's very clear to see which one you should use on your hitch.

The part # for the newer Short style is: KNW500020 and has teeth on the inside and can be seen here.

I hope this helps others in the future. Now to go collect the $40 part cost from my "friend" who broke it in the first place. Whistle

Obviously you don't have them stolen or rusted up as we do in UK
