Brown trouser moment
Used the car yesterday. Noticed it had started smoking a bit when giving it accelerating but only when quite a bit not just little bits of throttle. Got home and gave her some blips on the throttle. Clouds of smoke then suddenly redlined for about 5 seconds then dropped to tick over and sounded like a bag of spanners being shaken. Turned off and went inside and could feel my wallet wincing.
Put the shopping away and went back out with my icarsoft V2 and scanned everything. No faults logged anywhere and back to running lovely.
Only thing I can think of is I did top up the oil before we went out. Added just over a litre. Hopefully just that and burning off the excess. Not helped by the woefully poor dipstick indicators.
Has anyone found an alternative dipstick that you can actually read? I did look at the S type ones but not sure if they would be the correct length?2006 TdV6 HSE.

if you have got that close to engine run away (where the engine revs itself until it kills itself) I would recommend you drain some oil out!
Either out the bottom or suck out the dip stick tube!
No the jag dip stick isn't suitable!
If you read the dip stick first thing in the morning before starting, and do it 3 times, I'm sure you can get a good idea of the level.
I keep mine half way between min and max

Am used to checking oil just saying as others have done before that the markings on this one is woefully poor for getting an accurate reading.
Doesn't help I am normally parked sloped down to the left so I adjust for that when checking. Did have the car running for about 20 plus minutes when I went back out with the scanner. Ran fine and smoke gone so am hoping was only slightly over and has now burnt off the excess.
Won't be using until next weekend so will check level again before setting off and take action if needed.
I think I could actually feel my wallet breath a hugh sigh of relief when the scan came back empty and was running ok again. 2006 TdV6 HSE.

Could also be worn oil seals on your turbo.

fault codes don't tell you everything.
I would be far more worried about, the awful noise!
Why don't you check the dip stick on boxing day, and then you will have a few days to sort out the level.
for the sake of draining a bit of oil of, no point resulting in a £4000 replacement engine!

Maybe have a heavy plastic bag in the car to stall it if you have another runaway.

How does that work ? (Always good to know)The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the best of everything they have.

Strangle it ! stuff it, cover it anyway you can, the air intake to hopefully stop it eating itself, pull the hose off the air box and stop it drawing air and pray!

and there was me thinking you meant to catch the vomit when the queasy feeling gets too much.

Have been out and checked oil level. Is ok so have been very lucky and hopefully a reminder to others not to get enthusiastic when filling oil.
My interior is Alpaca so no bags needed 2006 TdV6 HSE.

Cover the air intake so stop air intake and hopefully stall the engine. Better still if you have a CO2 fire extinguisher blast that in the air intake. If either of those failed..... stand well back and let it off..... while filming it Personally I wouldn’t be opening the bonnet and going at the air box.... I wouldn’t be putting my head and arms that close to a runaway engine especially a V6 as it’s pointed straight at you if the head decides to launch
