Would you buy a D3 without a service book?

Looking for thoughts on buying a D3 advertised with FSH but the service book cannot be found (currently). There are service and maintenance invoices for 2012-15 and 2017-2019 both with LR Indi. 2006 model with 120k+...

Clean MOT last 3 years.

Main concern is resale down the line without a service book.
Also not having service book has to impact the selling price by an extent.

Would you risk it or go off receipts proving maintenance?

Thanks

Anyone can stamp pages in a service book - in fact blanks can be bought from the internet covering all makes and models.

I would say the 'genuine' invoices are more valuable (and the online MOT history), they show the real service history.

Evidence of all the correct belt changes and oil pump swap would be a key point also.

Just my opinion of course.

Loads of receipts dated with details of work done speak more than a service book,

Before my D3 died I had a file ~2” thick with invoices and other bits and bobs for her. If they can only show servicing invoices, well most of them, ask yourself “what about everything else?” These machines do not survive on just routine maintenance alone.

My “Italian special” D4 had a FSH handbook which while looking really nice wasn’t worth anything as it was all imaginary services. Thumbs Up

The invoice stack with receipts is useful.

As for resale value of a 2006 D3 in four years time..... yeah, I wouldn’t worry about the service book.

Well even as parts it has resale value.... and vultures won’t care about provenance Whistle

That being said, the UK government has pretty nice stats on discoveries registered vs taken off road. The curve isn’t very steep so the chance of a D3 being roadworthy and registered is quite high even in four years time.

Oh, I thought every vehicle de-registered for whatever reason (so also exported) would be a SORN over there. Clearly that isn’t the case.

It seems to just put an export marker against the car but all it’s details are still there. Unless I’m reading it wrong, it has been known. Whistle

Service book not worth a light in my book, some are a complete work of fiction and if you see some of the work done by LR stealers it can only be described as laughable.
As someone has already said service books can be bought new and doctored accordingly using info from the DVLA mot site for mileages and dates.
Look for general overall condition and receipts for work done and parts bought, anyone with a good idea for detail can usually work out how a vehicle has been used and treated. Thumbs Up

Agree with everyone who says the service books are absolutely worthless to a wise buyer. Go off condition and the seller. Invoices for work are a must. A FLRSH is also largely meaningless as has been said above. My car has FLRSH until I got it, but they never fixed the compressor after 3 visits for it and 2 changes. It was quite a simple fix. I look after it myself way better than a LR muppet - but no history stamps.

Given how D3s are aging, and if you don't know where to look/what to check for and don't have an IID, I'd probably want to buy from someone on the site rather than a random punter.

My D3 is nearly 14 years old now. It's in outstanding condition for its age, but a friend who has the identical same car same year has major issues with his - but you'd need to know the car to spot them. A cursory glance but a buyer would never spot them.

Great advice. I bought the D3. Excellent condition for 13 years old. Very little surface rust underneath. Lots of receipts for last 7 years all through Indi. Proved the 10 year service was done. The body is in better condition than my 2016 plate..

Also love the fact you get right of way down most streets 😀

sounds like you got a good deal then Thumbs Up

ive bought LR before with fully stamped main dealer service books and servicing invoices, but nothing about additional work. Ive called the main dealers who in all 3 cases had sold serviced and bought back the cars and asked them if any additional work had been carried out.
In all 3 cases i was fobbed off with the data protection rejection !! even when i reminded them it was a lump of metal and not a person.

my current D4 was bought with an almost fully stamped service book, and receipts to match the book. Some of the receipts showed brakes, tyres and other bit and bobs but nothing major. It may have had a complete new engine but without an invoice i dont have a clue... its the same for any car and you can only check so much
