Hi all. No doubt this question is asked a lot.
A few years back I had a 2005 (80,000 miles)Disco 3 which I absolutely loved. However it was a real money pit and in the end I had to sell it.
I am now thinking about getting either a 2013/14 Disco 4. I would not get one with over 70,000 miles.
Would I again be likely to be purchasing a money pit?
Any advice would be really appreciated.

you know they are complicated cars and expensive when they go wrong unless you can spanner them yourself..................you clearly like the brand for thinking of getting a second one....best d4 is the 8 speed...wish you luck in your deliberations.

Get the latest model with the best history you can afford. Some great vehicles come up on this site from time to time; if you're in no rush I'd definitely buy from an established member who knows how to look after these. PAGODA

Renewal of the front and rear camshaft timing belts, tensioners and tensioner bolt is due at 7 years, which is exactly where you're looking. Make sure you find out whether it's been done, and budget accordingly

The D4 is obviously an update to the D3. It has improved in some / many areas, but also added complexity. Cameras on the D4 can be troublesome and there is the general maintenance to be considered. If you're buying around the 70,000 mile mark; make sure the timing belt has been changed or factor this into your budget.
Still a great car, but as galwaygreen said they can be expensive to run D4 SDV6 HSE 11MY - Gone

The guy who bought your D3 is probably saying “this is the most reliable car I’ve owned, the chap I bought it off must have spent a fortune on it” 
50% of ex-D3 owners have regretted selling their first love, me included but the D4 is in a different league, “go on you know you want to” I say rubbing my hands with Germaline to sooth the cuts from changing the rear timing belt.  It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,

A few people at work admire my 65 plate D4 HSE Lux, ask if the horror stories they've read are true, and if they should buy one.
My 55 plate D3 HSE always got me home, but I did spend a lot of time laying underneath it fixing it.
However, it had a hard working life with me over 7yrs and I took it from 70K miles to 265K miles doing everything to it myself except change the Torque Converter. And that was due to illness/time.
I've not done many miles in the D4 since I brought it in Dec19, for the obvious reasons, but it has let me down once big time. It wouldn't start because the earth strap between the Chassis and engine had snapped.
Luckily it was on my drive and my local dealer had a replacement in stock, so a little skin off my knuckles later it was sorted.
I was lucky it hadn't snapped when the stop start had cut in due to a queue on a busy motorway the night before in rush hour.
The point of the above is to lead up to what I tell everyone at work.
They are not only the best 4x4 I've owned, but the best car I've owned full stop.
BUT, don't buy one unless you have the skills and facilities to fix it yourself, or can afford to pay somebody to fix it for you.
