Stinks of oil??
2010 D4 with 86k miles.
A couple of weeks ago I was 40miles into a 50 mile journey and I was *ahem* not hanging about. There was a sudden stench of what smelled like natural gas (no jokes thank you -this is what hot gear oil can smell like) then the car stank of gear oil inside and out. I took it to the local garage to have a look underneath but there were no leaks from any of the obvious sources.
Anyway I had it a Team Valley Land Rover for other work yesterday and asked them to have a look also. Nothing found but the car still smells of gear oil. You can smell it when stood opening the door and also when inside the car. It's not that strong but its enough to bother me, especially being our beloved marque.
Could anyone suggest what may be the cause? I had thought that maybe an HGV had dropped its oil on the road but surely the smell would have gone by now, and also I checked the bodywork at the time and there was no residue anywhere as you would expect if I'd driven through it.
The RH turbo core is wet with oil, and there is a weep on the transfer box - but these have both been there for over a year.

Does the A/C still get really cold?
Not easy to check in this cold weather. The gas also contains some oil in it to lubricate the system and if there is a a/c gas leak in the car it may cause the smell.Disco 4

^^ mine was screenwash. Luckily just dregs from a small bottle.
I've got the modified breather and oil for the front diff so its on the list of jobs to do. I'll also check the aircon, hadn't considered that one.
millers additive ? last summer I had some in the car and some leaked out. took days to clear the smell. didn't take much of a leak either. dissolved a pack of vinyl gloves too.

I don't keep it in the car. Those treatments do stink though. Got some on my hands and I could smell it for 2 days.
