I bought an SE from Lancaster Land Rover in Reading about 3 months ago.

During the negotiation they offered me an HSE auto for £38.5k.

As has been suggested look for web based deals. You can either buy from them or use them to pressure a dealer to match the price. That's what I did.

Have the negotiations been difficult and have they matched internet price? Lancaster are one of the dealers I consider visiting/checking when looking to buy D3 early next year.... (got it all aprroved by THE Boss 8) )

They matched my best internet price.

Negotiations were aided, I strongly suspect, by their need to achieve a a certain sales volume by a given date in order to qualify for some kind of bonus payment.

Negotiation technique was simple: match the price or I buy from the internet dealer. Which is exactly what I would have done.
