Buying an older d3 tips ?? |
|
Hi everyone,
Long story short ive been a landy nut for years, mostly obsessed with defenders but me and the wife have been chatting over the last week and have decided that the boring focus we bought for our new born is quickly becoming too small.
It was actually her that spotted an 07 plate d3 last week and said how much she liked it?!
So ive jumped on it, and started looking at it.
Obviously when first looking into the d3 world it is clear that there are alot of things to be wary of.
My question to you all is this,
Because of the huge list of issues which appear on d3's ;
Would it be better to buy say an 06-08 d3 with high mileage that has had work done in the hope of avoiding too many issues? Or is it better to pay more for a low mileage newer car??

I think that on a 11 year old vehicle (the MY07 you mentioned) regardless of mileage, assuming it’s been serviced properly, the same things should have been replaced by now. So auxiliary belts, better oil pump, cam belt, EAS compressor, maybe control arms, hopefully some bushes, etc.
Most likely, if buying from someone on this forum you’ll end up with a known good vehicle rather than one you’re buying blindly based.
Do spend money on a diagnostic tool, it’ll be something which saves you money in the long run.
Good luck

Read through the D3 forums on inspection checklists, what to look for, etc. before buying the vehicle.
Even if you’ve got car fever don’t buy the first one you find.

Thanks guys, i didnt even think there would be checklists on here for buying a vehicle.
Is it a given that there will be high running costs with d3s or is there a chance that once alot of the maon work has been done, that the car will be ok with regular servicing

If you are concerned about running costs buy a pre 06, low tax, low ins. <£200, spares are cheaper, service parts cheaper. Buy a good, well maintained, high mileage HSE and you will have a for a good many years, buy a poorly maintained low mileage and you will It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I was advised by my local landrover dealers garage foreman, a lot of years ago when getting tired of 'bargain' range rovers, to buy the best model auto I could afford, reason being, top models aren't usually thrashed by their owners, they have the dosh to have them properly and regularly serviced and even if they are pants at driving, the auto 'cushions' the drive train so less stress on on it. Best advice I ever had and has served me well. Currently have 2006 Disco 3 HSE, auto, Its been looked after, It had full service history when I bought it and because parts are relatively cheap, its been over serviced ever since, latest item new torque convertor and full box fluid change, (cant understand why some only change T/C fluid.)
Most tasks are well within the scope of DIY and with a Nanocomm life is easier.
Cheap tax, insurance and running costs (relatively) I see no reason to change.
Hope this helps

What you're saying makes total sense....
Its the same buying any used car you will always have nerves. I bought our 2014 focus auto because it was a sensible buy for wheb our son was born, reliable, cheap to maintain, clean inside and out..... and now i hate it every time i get in it because its so bland.
I definitely boight it for the sensible reasons, but wheres the fun?
When properly serviced and looked after.... im assuming d3s can be reliable and will look after you?
Something about buying a 10-12 year old car males me nervous....but thats why forums like these are great because you can atleast filter out the bad ones and learn whars commonly an issue

I've had my old bus 13years and it has 220,000 on the clock. Its used hard but well maintained and has proved to be the most stupidly reliable car ever. I've just had a new clutch and DMF fitted which is probably half its value, but it does everything I could want out of a car and it still makes me smile everytime I drive it. Service and maintenance history is what is key. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
Sold Volvo XC90 R-Design (known as Basil)
Sold - D4 HSE (Known as Gerty)
No longer the Old Buses original owner
231,000 miles and counting
05 S manual owned from March 2005
D4 Face lifted
Still original injectors and turbo
V8 Front brakes
BAS Remap, Allisport Intercooler and deCat
EGRs blanked
T-Max split charge
Hanibal Expeedition rack
Prospeed ladder
Duratrac tyres
IID BT
BAS FBH control
