Cambelt changes - advice please
Hi,
I know that this topic has been raised before but I haven't really seen any definitive answers - my Discovery 4 is now just hitting 7 years old (82,000 mls) so according to schedule its due to have cambelts changed.
I read varying posts/articles - some say body has to come off / others say can be done without removing body - some say rear belt needs changing (think that drives fuel/injector pump ?) / others say don't bother - what does the team think ?
I just got a quote from main dealer of £1,274.33 to do both belts (includes new injector pump), whilst a local outfit offered to change front belt for £450
I am now totally confused as to what is best course of action - any advice appreciated - also can anyone recommend a good place to get the work done in say Banbury/Leicester/Northampton triangle ?

Hi, I would say leave it another year and get your options together. Site member Flack is a master in this department.

Thanks - always have that worry niggling away at back of my mind that the belt is about to strip and engine will be wrecked

Had my old D4 front and rear timing belts done for £650 including VAT. No mention of body lifting or replacing injection pump.
I know at the time, they said don't get fobbed off by people saying that the rear belts don't need changing. This was done by an independent Landrover specialist.

To change the belts now or later is the million dollar question!
If it breaks before you get it done you'll be sick, but to be fair, I don't recall reading about a belt breaking without other factors. It's much more likely to be the oil pump casting (in earlier models).
The rear belt only drives the HP fuel pump, and at worst if it does snap, it'll just stop the car, without major damage.
Body does not need to come off for either belt. When it does get done, make sure to use good quality parts, and uses somone who know what they are doing Richard

In my case I have a 2016 Landmark, which I intend to keep to c.2022, current mileage c 36k, annual mileage c.10-12k
If I change the belts & fit a new oil pump towards the end of my ownership I will get little peace of mind or benefit. That being so I am budgeting/planning to do them,very early I accept, in late 2020.

Well its due to be done, so if you want to keep the service history correct, then you should do it. If you don't want to pay the dealer, why not find an Indy to do it? If the fuel pump belt fails, i don't think it will damage anything, but the car will stop. I couldn't be doing with that!
I had mine done at the dealer a few years ago, and it wasn't body off.

Thanks all - everything more or less confirms my own thinking - my local guy has bailed on doing the job as he has never done one before and reckons he doesn't have one of the required tools which costs £230
Have had a call back from 'clik mechanic' (on line booking system) - the guy there says he has personally done both belts, he confirms that the body does not need to come off and the job should take about 6 hrs for both belts - has given me a written quotation of £593 fitted including all tensioners etc.
At moment this is looking like the best option - Unless someone knows better !
I expect main dealers to be more expensive - but more than double the price and taking 2xdays not x1 ??

Just re-read the quote - had obviously misheard the guy - it is £493 not £593 - sounds unbeatable ?

Sounds very cheap however I assume that all he/she is doing is just belts and nothing else ? Main stealer charged me £1000 had the car for two days but I did get a courtesy car as well for the two days. Indy was cheaper and I was going to go down that route but still required a car to get around so was not an option.

Is that including parts? I would make sure decent parts are used. Is he replacing the idlers etc as well?
Remember the car will need servicing as well. The belts are just one part of the 7 year service.

The quote said "We have created a quote to replace the timing belt & fuel pump drive belt kits complete with deflection pulley & tensioners"
Yes appreciate there is more to be done but my local guy will get these sorted as usual.
It will be interesting to see how the job goes - will try and grab some photo evidence

Sounds daft but I didn't even bother asking - to be honest I was expecting a quote up towards £1k but when we went to nearly £1,300 I just switched off - am guessing they would say sensible precaution, whilst I tend to think adding to the work/bill ?
