Can´t open the bonet
Hello
I need you help !!
Last saturday morning i look something diferent on the front of my D3, the distance from the ligth to the bonet, weren't the same in left and in right.
Cause: The bonet wasn't lock in the left side.
So i push it down and it lock's. So far so good.
In the afternoon i get a warning of low washer fluid and go to a gas station to refill.
BIG PROBLEM. The cable didn't open the bonet !!!!!
I've already try to pull a litle harder (the cable) and nothing.
Can anyone help me pleaseeeee ???
Thank's
Regards
Rui Costa

Hi rcosta
I think your cable is burst!
What you need to do is:
1] Raise your D3 to offroad height.
2] Put a couple of spanners in your pocket.
3] Lie under your D3
4] Disconnect and remove the engine.
5] With a screwdriver [flat bladded] prise the catch open.
6] Re-new cable
7] Re-fit in reverse order.
Glad to be of assistance

Do you have LRA in your part of the world, or a nearby dealer ?"To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Not bad Mr.Ron but I could not figure out what you needed the two spanners in your back pocket for?..
Anyway Rcosta, simple things first
Sounds like (and I can´t see how) when you closed the bonnet it was not ligned up....the left to right bit
Try one person on the bonnet open handle inside the car and another person "gently...ish" trying to open the bonnet.
If the above can´t be done go to your dealer...or follow Mr.Ron´s method

I'd suggest as per JuanT, work on it with two people, though if those suggestions don't work I'd suggest one puts some tension on the opening lever in the car (not too much but enough to open it whilst there wasn't a problem), whilst the other forces the left and right parts of the bonnet up and down to try and reduce the friction on the catches. I'd assume that if it's been locked one side and not the other for a while then the bonnet has 'learnt' a new warped shape, and so the side that was unlocked will now need a hefty push down to allow the catch to undo.
If that doesn't work, then it's possibly a snapped cable; not sure what to do there though Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

There is no rush on this Right?....just the windscreen fluid nearly gone...but not totally gone?..no other under the bonnet "emergencies"?
Is your dealer going to charge you to fix or have a look at this?.....I can look at options over the weekend...travelling till then...well at least away from my Disco3
Ronp, not certain you need to raise to offroad height... from experience this all depends on (beer allowance)/(energetic activities).......I get by with a couple of half meter axle stands.... (under the car!!!)
Rcosta, let me know

come on chaps - be serious.
I did a bit of testing last night and found that if you hold both sides of the bonnet with each hand push down gently and concentrate very, very hard (like Uri Geller) then the bonnet will open all on its own
no need for spanners Duncan

Get an assistant to keep pressure on the bonnet release, then push down on the bonnet - particularly the left side. Hopefully, that'll take the strain off and allow the catch to release ...Regards,

Already try and didn't work.
In LRA they said they have to remove the front of the car, starting from down (????)
Another mechanic says that add to revove the front grille. This saturday i'll try this one and keep you posted.
Thank's

Yes, was already thinking on best way to 'break in' to the engine bay.
My thoughts were that the way with best damage limitation would be by [forceably] removing the grill.
A new grill is not that expensive by comparison.
Good luck

Hi Rcosta,
I´m home and can look to see if there is a reasonable work around for opening a bonnet thats got stuck somehow....
from what I understand the bonnet was not properly closed (but centered up ok) and then you noticed that the left hand (looking from the front) was not closed...and then closed it...........would suggest not ripping apart the grill just yet

Hmm,
Had a look at the bonnet catches this morning and assuming a LHD, then the bonnet operating cable runs from the handle inside the engine bay high up...near where the cold starter burner is then goes to the LHS and then RHS bonnet catches.
I made a couple of fotos if you think this will help you, advise and I´ll post
Can´t see how to remove grill unless bonnet open or at minumun ajar (not the thing that jam goes in...before I get wisecracked!)....but if was ajar you would not have the problem
Can´t see how to do this from underneath (ronp might be right that the only way is to remove the engine!
Cutting through the grill would be possible and then I reckon you could unscrew the latches.
One other thought .... when you operate the bonnet operating lever from inside the car there is the ¨normal" resistance right?....

Hello again
It's open !!!!!
I'll try to explain how to do it.
It took 15 min, but the first 13 were to improve the "hook".
With the bonet open teh front grille is easy to remove, right? He have 4 clamps in the 4 and 2 more in the middle.
So, the idea is to release the top clamps, from the bottom of them.
I made a hook like a question mark (?) and go fishing the clamps !! And it work's !!
After remove the grille is easy to get it open.
The problem was the catch near the cold start burner, was open and the cable from the inside was loose.
