How can you measure reliability?

Land Rovers are supposed to have a reputation for being unreliable. But how can this actually be measured and indeed is this actually true? I know some people whose D4s went wrong after just 15k miles and others who report no faults after 75k+ miles. I once had a Golf (supposedly reliable etc) and from the moment I bought it, it went wrong. 1st the electronics, then the engine then gearbox or a period of a few years. Eventually at 4 years old and 43k miles it died. Then there was that Top Gear episode where they each bought a BMW; same model, year and roughly the same mileage. Some of the cars worked and some didn’t work quite as well.

So are Land Rovers as bad as their reputation? At what mileage/age with a D4 would you start to fret that things are (or about to) go wrong? And are the equivilant Q7s and XC90s any better at the end of the day?

The golf VW reliability is only a myth created by marketing people.

But you can also say an engine should not break mechanically within 10 years these days.

Volkswagon passat nearly killed me, total brake failure, doing about 25 mph ( luckily ) in traffic, foot on brake pedal, no brakes, luckily swerved to miss car in front, all fluid had leaked from brake resevoir. AA man said result of applying electric parking brake to soon and damaging system, he said they were seeing more of this fault since the EPB were being fitted. Shocked

This isn't very detailed, 04MY to present is 14 years of Discoverys all grouped together to give 1 rating! There are 3 engines to consider surely? Changes made thought those years improving (hopefully) reliability?

Such a good and complex question that the OP asked, with no simple answer. Most reliability surveys are seriously flawed or misrepresented in some way and it’s hard to know what to base a decision on.

To me, I’d owned 6 of them, driving around 35,000 miles a year, spending my own money and using it as a work tool. As a result, I was mad enough to invest £100,000 in a FFRR and I’ve had no reason to regret it yet Thumbs Up So, if you ask me, I’d say that they’re generally very reliable and as long as a users expectations of customer service are reasonable then LR tend to be fair. Mostly... Certainly, I’ve never found any manufacturer better, or even as good.
 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: FL2 as a second car

2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)

Not realy when Vauxhall offer their lifetime warranty it was only good for 100,000 miles which for most is only 8 years, which is about the design life of most cars, yes if looked after they will last much longer but its no guaranteed.

And my discovery in 30,000 miles (its over 150,000 now) never been unusable, wifes Juke done 20,000 miles from new, Christmas tree dashboard the other day, virtually undrivable and had to go into the dealer under warranty for new injectors!!

Maybe we could start out own land rover only reliability poll starting with year milage etc. I certainly couldnt find anything helpful except the general consensus on this forum.

On the flip side of the coin, we have a 2011 Mini Cooper D that we bought with 3,000 miles on the clock that’s now done 65,000 miles, as well as the MY2010 Discovery 4 HSE that we bought from a private seller (member of this forum) when it was two and a half years old with 28,000 miles on the clock, that’s now done 70,000 miles.

The Mini has been used for all kinds of journeys; short trips to the shops as well as long motorway runs. The Discovery has only ever been used on good runs. Both have been nurtured and looked after properly with regards to servicing, warming up etc., etc.

The Discovery has had: -
MAF
Low end turbo
Suspension bushes and arms
Wheel bearing
Some module on the top end turbo
Door lock module and probably other things that I’ve forgotten for the minute.

The Mini has had: -
Nothing.

I had an Audi once..... Censored

I hummed and harred when I bought my T5 California. I knew I would have problems and I did. Not a lot of choice so I went with it. Nothing major but I've been to the garage nearly a dozen times since new. Luckily its local to me. Warranty expires this year and since I cant face having similar issues with a replacement T6 I'm going to keep it. I will put an aftermarket warranty on it.

The Discovery 3 that we own is the most expensive, when new, not to us, car that we have owned and has suffered from several early failures. At least I consider them to be early failures, especially when compared to other cars that we have owned. The HPFP being the most obvious example, it failed at 89000 miles. This is our third common rail diesel, both the others, a Peugeot 806 and a Ford era Volvo V70 AWD managed over 160000 miles without any such failure. Why?
The suspension pump of course failed at a relatively low mileage as did the suspension bushes. If I had bought this car new I would be very disappointed.
The old,2005, Fiesta that I bought for £550 3 years ago has now covered 160000 miles and in the 3 years/20000 miles that I have owned it, apart from normal service items, has only required new front springs. Not really a fair comparison, but still, I have more fondness for the old Ford.
 Simon.
