Car Cut Out

Gentlemen, I can now join you in the list of irritating little errors of the D3.

Today on my way to Hull, I was slowing down on the A14 to join the M1 at the M6 junction. At about 18 MPH the engine just stopped instantly. This is not the best place in the world to have a complete engine failure, I might add. So no panick, switch off, switch on again, wait the prescribed few seconds, much to the annoyance of a few dozen hairy truckers and restart. No problems and we are away again. Interesting I thought, but even more interesting was that the average fuel at that point was registering about 24.5MPG, obviously recovering from Sunday. Away I go onto the M1 still fine. About 20 miles further on the average fuel goes to 39.7mpg from about 25.6 by then. It then alters about 6 times between 15mpg to 42mpg until it settles down at 29.7mpg and did so untill I reached Hull.

As I had nothing better to do and whilst MrsBN was watching the dials, I put in a call to my personal LR inhouse expert and told him what had ocurred.

Don't worry he said the fuel is simply recalibrating and sorting itself out over the total average from last refuel. I must say I did not believe him and told him so.

He had no answer for the cut out, that is to be looked into.

On refuelling tonight, I worked out that with the figures I took on Sunday being mostly in low ratio and the drive today, it actually works out about right, so he may be correct. This could also answer some of the quirky reading we get especially if we do not associate it with recent drives.

I also contacted my dealer and the car goes in to be checked out towards the end of the week or when ever I am near the dealership.

In the meantime, Hull is a boringly long drive, so I called my Suzuki dealer, yes you heard right. That is because in a previous life he was a top LR surgeon. I explained about the cut out and his reply was, 'Quite possible, if you had been running well without a stop on a hot engine, when you stop reasonably quickly, the electronic airflap which happens to come from a Rover Shocked Shocked Shocked can malfunction and close, thus killing the engine dead.

So, lets see what the dealer says when it goes in?

Why Hull... seems a daft place to go to...

I usually reset the trip at every fill up. This is a habit for claiming mileage on expenses.

Also explains why I saw about 6MPG off road (reset when we headed off) as it started from scratch. You still showed in the 20's ???? Another reset before I headed home and I averaged 31 MPG ish again.

Yes I also reset on the dash for refuel and the trip for journeys. As for Hull, can't help it if the client has an office there, someone has to. There were adverts for 'Sexy Offices To Let' Shocked Different.

I just thought it was a silly advert for offices, but then it did catch my attention, so maybe it worked.

Further to my car cut out yesterday, been to the dealer today and they checked it out. No obvious problem, but the trip odometer zeroed at the point the engine cut out on the computer side. The odomter in the rev counter carried on, crazy. But it took about 20 miles for it to recalculate and sort it self out.

See you have even started using the little pics that are very annoying but rather fun.
