In Australia (Queensland) you were taxed on the number of cylinders regardless. So my D3 V8 was in the top tax bracket at over $1000 per annum.

Just to add the confusion, my 2011 D4 3.0SDV6 is only £290 a year, because it's a commercial.

How can not having rear seats make it 'cleaner'?

Mine sits in the 360 bracket at the moment but god knows what they will pull out next, probably work out a way certain colours mean more pollution, if you've got a car that's red they'll add another £100 Laughing

It’s nice paying £165 for Skippy after D3/4 rates. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Not that any of our 3 cars are taxed atm, saves princely sum if £38.75/month going needlessly into the bottomless pit that is Govt coffers. Thumbs Up

Had to re-tax our Octavia a couple of months ago when reminder arrived.
The tears of joy when I taxed it for £0.00, after remembering the £500+ annually for the Discovery (thankfully SORNed).

I'm sure it's having an effect on 2nd hand cars, as in driving them off the road. Plenty of 'normal' 2006 cars out there that hit the £600+ tax band (lot of Volvo's and Saab's I noticed along with the 'expected' diesel 4x4's). It is making me double check as my third car I was toying around with an older 4x4 for use as a load lugger and that sweet-spot 2005-2006 is a minefield of low-tax and high-tax vehicles.

If you are looking, or have, a 2005'ish car and its worth a couple of grand but the tax is £600+ its going to make you stop and think especially when there are (were?) plenty of cheap PCP deals of a couple of hundred down payment and same again monthly cost for a brand new small car.

Give it a couple of years and no doubt everyone will be driving the 'wrong cars' again and they tax them off the road Rolling Eyes

Encourage everyone to by a *diesel* as its clean, give financial incentives, low VED etc and then demonise it years later and tax people off the road

*insert electric instead of diesel*

Talking of PCP deals, some years ago the Bank of England governor commented that the next sub prime type financial meltdown will be PCP type car deals.
The next 6 to 12 months may be very telling with trying to manage Increased energy and mortgage costs, so there may be a glut of cars coming on to the market.
