Car Thieves Getting Cleverer

Don't want to worry you chaps, but came back to my D4, which was parked in a London street, to find a guy inside it, rifling through the glovebox. Asked the scumbag what he was doing in my car and he panicked a bit and ran off to a group of his scumbag mates. Apparently, according to some builders working nearby, he had a remote in his hand, unlocked the car (they saw/heard the locks pop, mirrors wind out) and opened the door. I have both keys in my house 50 yards away.

Took it to the dealers and they admitted that thieves are again scanning the frequencies, copying them and coding them via laptops to a generic remote and opening car doors. Apparently happening to BMW's and Bentleys, so we're in good company. One lady even found some cloned plates in the passenger footwell of her X5. It seems that they have not yet got the wherewithall to overcome the immobiliser to drive 'em away. LAnd Rover Customer Svs denied any knowledge of this having been previously reported.

BOTTOM LINE: NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE, SO DON'T LEAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE IN YOUR CAR.

Unfortunately car thieves have always been clever, or at least the one figuring out the kit/technique is. Doesn't take them long to get around security or through weaknesses. Sad

I presume this was a keyless D4? Still not an easy thing to do from a scanning point of view. To have any chance of starting to decipher the codes, they need to get within keyless range of your key fob, not just the vehicle! Do you leave your keys near the door at home?

Still, smarter than the scumbags near me... they'd just throw a brick through the window! Laughing

No, we don't leave them near the door, but the door is set back off the street, so if we did, it wouldn't let it open. Besides with a keyless D4, the key has to be within about 1 metre of the drivers door, for it to open when you put your hand behind the driver's door handle. We have tested this and it works, so they must have replicated/scanned the code.

I agree, at least no broken windows!

Now if I was a criminal and I wanted to scan both the vehicle and the fob when they were interacting, I would build a little self powered recording device that I could conceal on the vehicle and recover after a few days. It would not need to be as large as a book of matches so unlikely to be spotted by the driver.

So look out for persons looking or reaching underneath vehicles.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. The key fob doesn't need to be near the car... the scanning scroat's need to be within range of the key fob - ie keyless range to your keys! (and the vehicle at some point).

But...i was thinking that the keyless was a autoramdom non permament code generator system, that is: each time you open the car, both car and key change the code, more or less like if you change user and password each time you log in a web or webmail....

This way is much more difficult to copy the code because next time...is another one the used one, only antenna inthe car and you remote knows how to pair correctly again the next time you are near the car and want to open it...my garage door works in this way!!

Or maybe this is only for ignition?

Or maybe this is not true for no system, no doors no ignition?

I was thinking this was as i describe for all systems...

If not...what a rubbish!!

There was a report a few days ago of a certain type of credit card being copied with an IPhone while the card was being carried in the owners wallet Shocked the solution was to carry the card in tin foil to prevent this.

I had a not so bright thief have a go at mine.

Tried to open the tailgate by pulling on the rear wiper.

Turns out the lock on the boot is stronger than the bracket the motor is held on.

£100's worth of damage plus labour... could have been much worse. Rolling Eyes

Good news... not all thieves are bright Thumbs Up

You're right, it is coded and changes each cycle. On top of everything else, the key only reveals it's code when it's within range of the vehicle's signal. I've only seen one method used to break these systems and it involved a lot of quite sophisticated equipment, not the sort of stuff your usual scumbags would carry. Instead of thinking about this as scanning, imagine a system that effectively extends the range of the key.

From what 20red says at the start, it would seem there's now another method?

Just leave your rottweiler or mother in law in the car when you park up
With any luck the dog will still be there when you come back!
Job done!

RFID scanning ....both my credit & debit cards have a RFID chip ...if you store them next to each other in your wallet it makes it very difficult to collect the correct data Thumbs Up

It was a trend in this area last winter, drunken teenies snapping of and collecting rear wipers, 10 or 12 cars could be hit a night until the culprits where finally cought.

I had a less than genius level type scrote try and break into my D4 on my drive a few weeks back. He activated the security lights, which in turn activated my large German Shepherd. I activated the front door and she then did her best to deactivate said scrote. I think this caused him to activate both his bowels and legs at the same time Smile He got away but only just. Don't think he'll come back but Abbs has her fingers (paws) crossed that he does.

I have no concerns about a car thief getting chewed up by a large dog, I mean, it's not like they're real people is it? I have signs up warning of the fact that there is a guard dog on the premises. if they're stupid enough to ignore it then that's their problem IMHO.
