Hi,
I have been building a carputer for some time. Originally I was building it on a very small formfact HP PC. Then I changed my mind and moved to a Samsung Netbook. The reason for this was because the battery would allow the netbook to go into standby safely rather than just switching off. However I have to remove the netbook, open the screen and power it on, which isn't ideal.
So I am not sure what to do.
I want to have a PC that will power on when the car is switched on, and goes into sleep mode - or hibernates or shutsdown safely when the car is turned off. Anyone got any ideas? I want to either use my Samsung Netbook or HP small form factor PC as I can't keep buying PC's for this! D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Not much help with a notebook Stu .. But for a small pc I have a power supply that will cut of your pc at a pre determined voltage .. To save your car battery .. You also have the option to shut down / hibernate / standby .
It's also dependant on the ignition wire .. So when you turn off the car it will also go into any of the above modes G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Which Samsung do you have? The NC10s have the power button on the side of the hinge which is easily accessible. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I'm using one of these power supplies in my CarPC - a M2-ATX:
http://www.mini-box.com/M2-ATX-160w-Intell...wer-Supply
The CarPC turns on (or comes out of suspension/hibernation) with the ignition key and shuts down (or suspends/hibernates) when you turn the ignition off.
It will also disconnect if it detects that the battery voltage is too low...
Very good piece of kit and is probably the one Wiggs is talking about 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

I use a Dell Latitude laptop, connected to an 8" touch screen with the VGA and an USB cable. The laptop is now mounted in a port replicator, or mini docking station, which have external power button, just of the reason that the on/off button is behind the screen. Next will be to open the docking station and rewire the on/off switch to an external button on the dash. I want to have manual control on when the car-PC should be on or off, otherwise I had probably connected it to ignition and programmed the button to use hibernation.

Thanks for the info. Wiggs the device you mention sounds like exactly what I need. Question though, how do I get it to go to standy, surely when I turn off and remove the key, the power to the aux ports will be stopped and the PC will shutdown in an unsafe manner?
Where did you get yours from?
Thanks for the info, sounds like I'm getting close to having it sorted! D3 HSE MY05 Auto

It basically connects to 12v constant supply and 12 v ignition supply ..that way the circuit board can work out when the ignition is off and allow time for the pc to shut down / hibernate ..what ever you have it set too
Its set up via some jumper pins on the board ..very easy and very efficient
Got mine with the pc ..but a quick search http://www.cartft.com/catalog/gl/13
Different prices for different Watts ...you want the one that looks like a cicuit board ..not the one that looks like a multi plug..like this one
http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/574
Have a read of pdf on that page ..very clever bit of kit G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

I've looked at the links, but I'm still not clear, I understand that the power supply can tell the PC to shut down etc but what I don't understand is how to cable my PC into the car. It seems that I can't just use an Aux port?
Thanks for all the advice so far, it's been very helpful D3 HSE MY05 Auto

The M2 ATX would replace the onboard PSU on the Samsung - providing power direct to the rails via the usual PSU connectors. I used one on the dedicated carputer I built for my mate's Defender and it's a cracking bit of kit. Would require you to crack open the case on the NC10 and pull the onboard PSU connectors so you could put these ones in and assumes the board on the NC10 has the usual Mini ITX form factor connectors.
The PSU has jumpers that allow you to set it to do a "hard" switch off (NO!!!), a soft switch off (that's the one - turns off the pc safely after a few moments) or taxi mode (stays on until the car battery dies.) I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Wiggs,
Sorry I think our posts crossed!
Ok I'm being a bit dim! I was asking about powering the computer on and off, but I was also assuming that the PC would be powered from an inverter running from the Aux socket. But you guys are saying buy one of these boxes for my PC, and it will power the PC from battery, and power it on and off dependent on the ignition?
If so then that what I need, then all I need is to work out how the hell to wire it in! D3 HSE MY05 Auto
