Cat N - Vandalism to Underside

Evening chaps,

Looking at a D4 in the morning that is Cat N (non structural)
The price suitably reduced to reflect this.

On the vehicle report, The Cat N states as follows...

Stolen/Recovered
Damaged Areas - Underside
Cause of Damage - Vandalism

Any idea what is likely to have happened to the underside to cause a £20K+ car (as it would have been at the time) to be written off as Cat N?

i.e when I get underneath, where should I be pointing my torch?

Fuel tank for starters, possibly rodent damage to wiring harness or stolen/damaged CAT or DPF

Damage to result in Cat N classification. A combination of parts and labour approaching £10k, assuming a similar amount recovered from sale of salvage.

I have seen this with Jaguars. They have low ground clearance, plus fragile costly suspension, covers etc. It soon adds up. A D4 is far more durable, but reckless off-road use over railway tracks etc. will cause parts to bend and break. Exhaust system, fuel tank & support, bumpers, suspension and sills will be a good start. Maybe something that would require body off for a proper repair. Chris

Thanks guys,

The vehicle was recorded Cat. N in February 2019 and offered for sale in March 2020 when it was purchased by the current owner.

It has passed every MOT since, no problem.

Also, prior to putting it up for sale, the current owner had it in the garage (LR Independent) to replace the oil feed pipes at the rear of the car. (his words) He had other work done at the same time as outlined in the photo.

Could the oil feed pipes have been damaged during a bit of rampaging by the scrote/lowlife?

The difficulty comes if you ever need to sell it…not many people would want to touch it …
You will also find it incredibly hard to trade or part ex it as dealers would not want to have any part of it….
There are loads of cars out there thus I would keep looking.. be super careful as there are lots of stolen ones now around floating about… you need to properly inspect the stamped in chassis numbers.. almost disregard the sticky ones as they are ten a penny…

Is it a private seller?

Wrong. I have purchased numerous category cars with no problems insuring. The payout is adjusted to compensate. 2010 HSE
Full service genuine parts.
Front and rear pads.
Turbo oil drain pipe mod.
LED interior lights upgrade.
Both rear door actuators.
Tailgate handle/ switch.
Facelift grille and rear lights.
Fitted cross bars.
New rear discs and pads.
New RH inlet manifold.
New air con condensor.
New battery.
New EGR pipe.
New front discs and pads.
New propshaft.

Have you run it through either VCheck or Car Vertical to see if you can see the "pre-repair" salvage photos?

Ping me the reg if you want me to run it through VCheck. I have a handful of vouchers left from a bundle I bought while looking for a car for a mate. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Apart from the obvious dodgy past, previous to the seller, the car checked out ok.
They bought it as Cat. n 2 years ago for £26K Shocked
People were genuine folk (yes, private sale)
Price was right.
Got it insured no problem (£340 with £400 xs)
Not bothered too much about re-sale as it will be a workhorse/shopping trolley for the next 5 years at least, whilst we convert the 2 barns into holiday cottages.
I'll be looking for a builder's trailer next.

Thanks for your help and advice. Maybe I was hasty but time will tell if I made the right decision.

I have to say, having looked at some, this is a very clean car.

Looks like a nice car and assuming the work done is fine, I don't know why it can't see sterling service as a workhorse for the foreseeable. When you sell it, it'll be that much older that the difference in price to a non-damaged one will not be significant, especially as it'll have been in constant use since.

Maybe not the ideal colour for a workhorse, but that apart, crack on, I say.

My thoughts exactly. In the meantime I have a high-spec, lower mileage car for less money.
