Wow!
I used to be heavily into riding tandem cycles and my wife and I had two of them built for us. It was a time when aluminium was becoming very popular in the mainstream, but the specialists held out with Reynolds 531 steel tubing which was so much nicer to ride and strength for strength, lighter than aluminium! Aluminium still won the battle in the end, it was much easier to work with for mass production and always sounded more "modern" than steel...

Im far from an expert but have to say the correct alloy is very strong, after all they make planes from it.

Alloy of what?

Reynolds 531 is a manganese molybdenum alloy of steel and was used to build the space frame for Supermarine Spitfires...

Yes we know but as a general rule the word alloy means aluminium.

Obviously thats not the correct tech term but a bastardisation of the english language like so many things nowadays.
