Choice of 2 for Morocco
Doing the Protrax Morocco trip in October. I understand the amount of time actually being in the sand isn't that much.
I'm driving down from Calais. I'm thinking the 18"'s will be best especially on the long road journey down but thought I'd ask anyway....
So my choice:
1) I'm currently on 19" MTR's and I have 2 spares, could just leave them on
or
2) Put back on my 18" Goodyear Wranglers that came with the the D3. They are in as new condition and I also have 2 spares.
Can't afford any other tyres as I have blown my budget on the trip, roof tent, roof bars, radios, mantec, snorkels etc etc etc so it's got to be a choice of these 2

I'd take the MTR's, less likelyhood of a puncture. May not be as good in deep sand, but like you say, there will be more rocks than sand to worry about.

Just abit worried about the 3,000 motorway miles I'd be doing on MTR's
all the Desert Storm lads did it fist time and me in the 130 no problem as Gareth said better side wall protection

They are actually not that noisy from what am told. And TBH, better to get there with a bit of a rumble and have a tough tyre than get there in supreme peace and then have issues with punctures

I have done over 170,000 on MTR's, been to Morocco twice with them. You will find that the DSC will fook you in the sand before tyre 'types' affect the grip in sand.In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Forgot to ask, on the day/s when we do play in the sand, what pressure should I run the 19" MTR's at?

15-18 psi but dont turn too tight/fast.
But If I was you I would experiment that way you will learn how much difference a few lb make. Try driving up a slope with standard pressures, when the car fails drop the pressure by 2 lb and try again. keep dropping the pressure until you get the results you want.
An old one eyed Nomad called Philip once showed me a trick for the perfect Pressure V Sand V Car weight.
Place the car on flat ground,
Completely deflate one tyre,
Place some sand on the top of the flattened wall (the bit squashed out at the bottom)
Inflate the tyre until the sand falls off the wall you now have a perfect Tyre V Sand V Weight set up.
Deflate the remaining tyres to match.
Now this is not an exact science and there are obviously circumstances that may impact this perfect ratio, For instance a low profile tyre will shed the sand quicker so you have to take this into account In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Would the road noise be that great with MTR's if he has a roof rack and roof tent on board? me thinks no... I'm Powered by........Diesel
