Chunk between 2nd - 3rd gear

Hi - searched for a topic on this, but I didn’t find anything, so starting a new post.

When I loose the throttle for a few seconds and I push it again, I get a dry-metal sounding ‘chunk’ coming from (what seems) either the gearbox, or the front differential. You can actually feel it. Usually between 2nd and 3rd gear.

The gearbox was revised completely , didn’t solve the problem. Also had a mega flush and a new filter unit. The differential oil was changed, no revision there was done.

The cas is from 2005 and has app. 350k km. The issue’s there since I’ve bought it 2 years ago, but hasn’t got worse since then. But since the car is in perfect shape, I want to get rid of this too.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks, Raf

When the gearbox was revised, what exactly was done?

I’d presume there is some mischief going on within the valve body.

My English or technical knowledge isn’t that well to explain exactly but the torque converter was changed, as well as the (or some) bearings and steel plates (friction plates or so).

Ok. Inquire with your mechanic about the valve body. This is responsible for making the shifts. Failing solenoids are a common source of bad shifts. If you have a GAP tool you can view the voltage readings of each solenoid and that can give you an idea of their health.

Thanks !

I do have an IID-tool and I’ve read the voltages through live values this afternoon. It looked ok, in that sence that they all, alternately, gave the same voltages (min and max) - anything specific that I should look for ? Or a specific value that I need to read ?

There is a range for min-max, however I cannot find that info at the moment. I recall min value being .5V. However, if all of yours match then I would say that the solenoids at probably OK.

The only other suggestions I would have are replacing the valve body to transmission body seals (4 rubber tubes and a rectangular “bridge” seal) and/or a Sonnax Zip Kit, which replaces the wear parts within the valve body. Either of these require removing the valve body.

Hopefully someone else can chime in with some other advice.
