Clunk when pulling away and slight rotational knock

Hi all,

Recently bought a Manual 05 D3, 107k miles, just had all front wishbone bushes replaced so I don’t think my problem refers to these.

I have a metal on metal sounding clunk when I pull away 90% of the time, only as the clutch is fully out. Then what follows at low speed is a slightly random but rotational knocking sound.

Any ideas what this could be? I was thinking lower steering column after doing a bit of searching, but I really have no idea.

Any help and rough estimates costs to fix would be appreciated

Cheers,
Will

It had the rear prop done 3-4 years ago, probably only about 20k ago. I’ll see if there’s any play by trying to move it around

Try moving it up and down and check the rubber isn’t split

I put a rear drive shaft on mine and it lasted 2 weeks and was falling to bits next new one is perfect
So don’t matter how old it is they can fail mate

Ok cheers I’ll take a proper look, is it reasonably easy to swap as DIY?

What’s the going price for a new prop?

Had a look at the receipts, it was done 6 years ago which it’s half it’s life ago! I’ll check it before ordering a new one but sounds the likely culprit.

I’ve ordered a new rear prop, it should arrive before the weekend so I’ll fit it up and report back any improvements.

I’ve inspected my current prop and there’s a lot of play around the centre bearing but no visible tearing to the rubber, it is however quite cracked and perished. Also the front joint to the transfer box has flung all its grease out.

When you say 'flung it's grease' I presume you mean like this -

Also my CB rubber looks in good shape, but does in my opinion feel more moveable than it should.....

Yeah exactly like that, but an inch or two slightly further rear wards on the car.

I’m hoping a new prop fixes this annoying noise as it’s a waste of £270 if not!

You will m is if it’s the prop bearing by looking and feeling it move the prop up and down if it can move a lot it worn and it’s mainly the rubber around the bearing

Update on this - replaced the rear prop, noise still there. Even though the old prop was in pretty bad shape, so it was worth changing it anyway, the noise is very much still there - any one else any ideas?!
