Does a clutch change involve taking the engine out or just dropping the gearbox?

dropping gearbox out only but it is still quite expensive task

Indeed! Although I didn't pay all of it the cost for mine including the DMF was in the region of £1250 about 10ish years ago at Lancaster ISTR and theeeeennn......???
