If the top 2 connectors have no wires. LR wouldn’t have fitted that? Maybe someone cut the wires out of the back of it and connected it to the ring unit ?

The top connect is probably power.
The other connector does look like towbar signals.

This is a genuine kit.

Top 3 connecters are behind bumper for body removal.

Bottom 2 go inside car. And what you are looking for

Thanks again.

I think I've worked out what was done previously.

Part AH22 - 15R555 - AC (Trailer Towing Land Rover) was added to provide tow bar electrics.

Two plugs from the vehicle loom were disconnected from the captive blank sockets and fitted to the sockets on the new harness.

The blank sockets were left in place). These are the 'blanks' in the top left of the first photo. I've now removed these and fitted in their place the sockets on the new harness noted above. Installation is a bit neater now.

The wires from the pre-wired left hand plug on the RTC485 Smart Logic module were 'Scotch-locked' to the appropriate wires in the vehicle loom, and the 12N wires were fitted to the scerw terminals on the RTC485, except for the white (earth) which was fixed to vehicle ground.

This all works for lighting, but does not disable PDC sensors nor rear fogs as discussed earlier.

I have since noticed that the grey and the pink wires from the RTC multi plug have been cut off to a stub. The grey is to collect signals from the vehicle's lighting circuit for 'Reverse'. As this is not connected to anything, there's no signal collecting possible and may be the reason why the PDC sensors aren't disabled when 12N plug is inserted.

Pink is for second buzzer, so not used in this installation.

Anyway, I've learned a lot from this.

1. If I fit a dedicated 13 pin kit, my IID G3 will code it if required. (my original question)

2. The vehicle wiring is intact, albeit the RTC485 is Scotch-Locked to it for now, so I could add 12S or go to dedicated 13 pin which should be plug and play (plus remove RTC485 etc).

3. I could leave things as they are, and possibly add 12S as I want trailer reverse lights.

4. I could change the 12N socket for one which has the extra feature to defeat the rear fogs. I can live with how it is now, rarely tow in poor visibility so fogs not used.

I can manually disable the PDC sensors with the dashboard switch (provided to switch on the front PDC sesors when moving forwards) so I don't have to put up with constant bleeping when reversing with trailer.

Perhaps it's no wonder no one has bothered to change this set-up in the last 9 years. LOL

I found this link which was helpful (thanks to dgardel)

It is certainly a weird setup.

If AH22 - 15R555 has been fitted. And I don’t disagree.
Are there 3 spare plugs outside the car? Either look up under the car, behind the left rear light or remove the rear left light.

The 7 core cable which goes into screw terminals. Has this cable been drilled through the floor ?

The grey reverse wire is to amplify the trailer reverse light. Of course that box is not required on Landrover. It’s not the reason park sensors don’t shut off.

Thanks Pete,

I think I see this even more clearly now.

That harness has been fitted.

But the three 'outside' connectors have not been used.

Instead, the RTC 485 modue has been spliced in with Scotch Locks and the 12N 7 core cable passed out through an existing grommet in the floor, thence to the 12N socket.

Do I understand you correctly? The RTC485 is not required at all for this vehicle. If correct harness and 12N socket is connected to the appropriate 'outside' connector(s) that's all that's required? The PDC sensor wil be disabled when 12N plug is fitted and rear fogs will be also be disabled? This is all controlled by the car's systems, no additional 'black boxes' required?

Presumable the same will apply to 12S or to 13 pin sockets too?

Correct.

You can connect either 7 pin or 13 pin socket(s) to those external connectors, and it should just work.
Park sensors will be disabled, car height changes will be banned, trailer indicator bulbs will be monitored for failure, trailer reverse lights will work.

Having said that, if you disconnect the towbar socket green and yellow wires from the Ring screw terminals and connect it to the appropriate point (ie where that external loom is connected to) you will also get those functions for free. (because when the car see's trailer indicators bulbs connected, it knows a trailer is hooked up).

You may find none of the foglights work. In which case you could fiddle with the GAP IID to make them all work. or move the towbar socket blue wire to the appropriate point (ie where that external loom is connected to)

If you use a caravan I think there is a relay back there for the fridge supply.

Thanks for guiding me through this.

That's great as this gives me several options. I'll try the 'free' option first (why not?).

But to add 12S could I plug the appropriate harness and 12S socket to the correct 'outside' connector?

I've not been able to find a part number for the 12S unfortunately. Can you shed any light onto this, please?

You might want to have a look here for the parts you need

https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/vplat001...6280-p.asp

There is a forum discount code AF4LRP if you spend over a certain amount (very easy!)

Sorry, I don't know the part number.
I had a look on ebay, and everything was expensive ~£100, when all your really need is a 12S socket and 1 wire for reverse. (or 2 if you want to be flash and fit an additional earth)

If you aren't going to be reversing in the dark, and it's a small trailer where other road users can see the D4 reverse lights, I do wonder if it's worth the effort. And mainly are you going to bother connecting up 2 sockets to the trailer every time you hook up.

Food for thought.

I have a new 12S socket and plug (£8.95) so I'll probably just connect this up if I'm successful with your suggestion regarding the indicator wires.

Thanks again for all your help.

I'll come back and let you know how I get on.

Best regards,

Paul

Woohoo!

I fitted the yellow, green and blue wires as PeteK suggested.

When the12N plug is inserted the rear PDC sensors are disabled (haven't tested the fronts yet).

The trailer indicator light flashes on the instrument display.

The rear fogs on the vehile are disabled.

All as it should have been all along. No idea why the RTC485 was fitted, just seems to have caused problems.

Also, remember to turn off ignition between plugging/uinplugging 12N or the above effects will not be observed.

Thanks a lot Pete. I'll probably disconnect the RTC485 completely, make good the 12N wiring and fit the 12S that I already have.

What a pleasure it's been to be treated with respect and given sound advice from a number of contributors.

Can't wait for a dark and foggy night so I can practice some trailer reversing. LOL.

Best regards

Paul

Out of interest, what happens when you put your foot on the brake pedal with trailer plugged in? Any dash error messages?

If yes, the red wire needs moving over as you plan to anyway

Morning Pete,

No problems with dash error messages when trailer plugged in and brake pedal pressed.

I'm just about to complete the removal of the RTC485 from the 12N circuit, testing any effect with each wire removed in case problems arise, so I'll report back later.

You will find that the towbar socket black and brown wires only have 1 wire to connect to on the LR

Hi Pete,

Thanks, I noticed that as I removed RTC485 wiring.

12N now fully operational.

Action on 12S is 'pending'.
