Many many people have proved pouring hot/boiling water over the temp sensor makes a car (2.7 TDV6) with failed glowplugs start in freezing weather.
What the ecu adjusts in a hot start I don’t know! But fitting a switch & resistor is more elegant and quicker.

I don’t either for certain, it is just possible it retards the fuel injection timing, I have experienced diesels failing to start when very hot in summer after working hard, they have the symptom of the injector timing being to advanced, but turning the temperature reading up will reduce the amount of fuel injected and the length of time the good heater plugs are on, if at all. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I remember someone suggesting that when cold the engine expects the glow plugs to pack a lot of punch and thus actually lowers the amount of fuel to ballance the input from the hot glow plugs. Unfortunately the glow plug system is one of the few systems not monitored so when cold starting the engine automatically assumes the glow plugs are helping. When tricked into thinking the engine is warmer the engine knows it has to start on its own.
None of the older tractors we have have glow plugs fitted to the engine but some have them on the air intake to heat the air.

M3 - If the glowplugs have failed, if makes very little difference if they are requested on or not!
Erea - Good theory
The Jags with these engines, monitor whether the GP work. As soon as one fails, the dash light goes on, and owner takes the car to the garage, and most are replaced (easily I guess)
I doubt it corrects the fueling? but when 1 has failed it doesn't make a lot of difference.
But LR's owners don't know when one has failed, or 2 or 3 etc. until we have a cold winter

Not sure about that - all I can say is I have put the 5 k resistor in and bingo i have no issues now
I have fitted it to a horn type switch (pressed in - on and finger removed - off so as soon as the gauge rises up to just under half way I remove finger and start

What would happen if the button was pressed with the engine already hot and/or button held in whilst trying to start, just curious if anyone knows?
