colour of oil

I have had my oil changed yesterday at the main dealers,it has the five year service package, car is on 17 670 miles.I drove 12 miles back home. Now me being a cynical person decided to look at the oil so I extracted some with my vacuum pump.I was surprised to see the oil was totally black and I mean totally black question would the oil be that black after just 12 miles. My old D2 the oil stayed clear for about 100 miles.Trust a garage, not me,am I being paranoid ?? Whistle

Did they say in the service oil and filter change. If so no not after 12 miles unless they didn’t drain it all out and topped up.
Go and ask them to clarify.

After 12 miles it will be black as a black thing in the eyes of a very black cat on a pitch black night.

Well mine was after similar distance when looked at using that quaint old thing called a dipstick. Thumbs Up

I can’t speak for anyone else but on my D3 after oil and filter change with genuine filter and Castrol magnatec I can still see fresh oil after returning a 20 mile journey. Not like new obviously but not jet black

I am sure if I went back they would look at me with shock horror, are you disputing our ethics sir ? reckon the only case I might have is if I get the oil analysed and go back with some proof. Shocked

Thanks DSL that's reassuring,I mean it would be very difficult to believe they would not change have changed the oil wouldn't it ? Part of my problem I worked in garage as a young man many years ago and I saw what went on Whistle

In my experience, unless you flush the engine, there’s enough dirty oil left in the engine after it’s been sucked out to cause it to go black pretty quick. And diesel cars are worse for it. I would judge it better by feel.

Seen the cost of engine oil just change it for the peace of mind. You got the pump, all you Need is 7 liters of oil prpbably worth 35£.

How much hassle will it be to go back and Dispute?

Engiens can be different to each other, even the same make/model, change the oil and run it, check it and its full on black, yet I see otjer engines 8 weeks and 20k late which clearly had an oil change last inspection and you can still see its brown/light black.

Then theres my boat oil changed 2018 well over 100 hrs running and its still golden brown!

My D3 oil is always black, pretty much straight away after an oil change.

I would take the advice mentioned above and change it yourself, then check it after a few miles and see how it looks.

Yes you then cannot complain, but then you at least know to avoid or carry on using the garage.
Add in the fact you felt the need to extract some, you just know in your heart something aint right.

It was a main dealer and it was the last free service as I had the five year service plan.I am going to change the oil, probably not needed but will always niggle so I will change the oil myself,it's easy to do with the pump. Thanks for your advice.

I would be far more worried if it was not black after 12 miles, main dealers don’t drain the oil with the same amount of patience as an owner, they just suck it out which is never as good as a draining, IMHO, just easier, quicker and cleaner, but no removing the the engine under tray for a visual inspection, first time I did my D4 I found the oil vacuum pipe that joins onto the sump leaking and dangerously close to coming off Shocked
