Still no split tailgate though Sad

I still hanker after the original side-opening tailgate, which is what a 'proper' Discovery ought to have: original and best Wink

As a matter of interest, what were the benefits?

Not having the lower tailgate in the way when trying to get something out of the far away parts of the boot.

And those of shorter stature can close the tailgate without having to get a box to stand on Wink

I had a D1 before buying my Defender, and at the same time had a Freelander 'classic' which also has a side-opening door (as does Defender, of course). It's very much a traditional LR feature whether you like it or not.

A bit like dodgy build quality and electrics then? Some traditional features are not always welcome... Whistle Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

I’ve never really found that a problem; if the lower tailgate is in the way, I simply raise it. If I still can’t reach, I’m going to have to lower one of the rear seat backs and get at it from that end (with or without a lower tailgate!).

Guernsey 2016 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 Landmark LE Auto Santorini BlackDiscovery 4

Well another day spent with a D5 yesterday.

It confirmed my suspicions from previous experience that for a fairly tall person 6 3'' that the drivers seating position is not able to be as high set as in the D4. The D4 definatley has more headroom than the 5, which is partly due to the front windscreen coming in at a lower angle. On playing with various settings I also found that the highest settings on a D5 which brings the seat forward then caused problems with entry and hitting head on whilst entering.
I was pleased in one way as found having the seat much lower than norm I could avoid head hitting on entry.

I'm pretty certain noted before that being taller the instrument panel was harder to view with its protruding binnacles

Mine was obviously a well used loan car, but certainly from the marks and scratches on it in and out and certainly seemed some of the materials used were not as durable. The dash and door trims seemed to be made of a recycled plastic rather than the leather trim in D4 and the cheap black shinny trims everywhere showed up every mark and touch.

The front storage compartments were appreciated and much improved as by the end of production the D4 had got less and less.

Yes it is a nice car, but still not seeing as on a higher quality level than the last production of D4's and therefore not as good value for money spent.

Hope next time Landrover use taller kids in the design process Laughing Thumbs Up

You’re certainly right about not being able to have the driver’s seat up nice and high without banging your head on the roof getting in and out. I shall have the pleasure of running a D5 for three days, starting on Saturday, so I shall look forward to that! Rolling Eyes

Yeah, much head banging getting in and out of a D5 for me. I also caught my head on the tailgate (the centre part Shocked Laughing )

Another reason why I'm leaning towards the idea of a used L405 SDV8 as my next LR.

Driving around in another D5 3.0d HSE Lux whilst my Jag is with someone else for a week.

I'm still liking it very much and still preferring it to my D4's (for different reasons to many on here, the 'practical' issues are still more than adequate for me and the RR levels of luxury more pleasing).

Any issues of shape of boot, sloping this that or other and whether a split or one-piece tailgate is 'better' along with the rear seats not being 'as high' or whatever are all lost on me now I've been driving D5's more and more. The thing is Censored huge whatever way you look at it and I see no issues in rear seat and/or boot room/width/practicality/height, etc.

Subject to changes to our car scheme (i.e. the V8 4.4d disappears from RRS) then I'll be having a D5 3.0d HSE Lux over a Velar or an F-Pace or 3.0d RRS, my concerns of the losing circa 40bhp in the D5 engine to the RRS or F-Pace 3.0d are no longer there having racked miles up in D5's now Thumbs Up

Still don't like the silly rear number plate and a two-line 'Euro' plate will be going on if I do have one
