Complete failure

It all started with hill descent control failure on the highway followed by suspension failure, transmission failure (F), radio off, nav screen off, (dash)lights off and finally engine stall…. All failures came in sequence, following each other within 1 minute to complete “melt down”. There was no warning saying something was wrong with the battery or the charging of it. What can have caused all this?

Not aware you get a specific warning, might be worth starting with the battery if it is the original, as it will be coming up 5 years old before long Thumbs Up

Did one off your rear lights stop working?

I am not sure but if it was the battery I think I would happen at start-up not while driving. It could be a power problem but then I guess the altenator.

I have had a couple of D3's where the alternator fails & doesn't display the battery light, thus the battery isn't being charged & everything slowly drops out or displays warnings due to low voltage.

regards

Steve

Alternator fault would show a red warning on the dash

Everything stopped working, even my hazard lights.... Shocked

My first thought was also the alternator, but I would still expect some warming on the dash and not a 'sudden' stand still on the highway…or am I expecting too much? Smile

Try checking the battery terminals - make sure they're fully tightened and there's nothing funny going on with them...

Probably not the cause, but worth checking just in case Thumbs Up

Alternator - mine died spectacularly a month back. Not sure of exact sequence of lights (wife was using car) but christmas tree of lights, hazards etc then only just enough juice to shut a window. Then flat- zilch - not enough to lock the car. Alternator died and took the 9 month old battery with it.

Sounds like a CAN bus cascade. Corroded / damaged wire / connector ? There's some fairly expose connections under the rear wheel arch. rough guess of course, over to the experts......

Collecting the car tonight..... Alternator was blown and took the battery with it. So far, no sign of any more damage. Keeping my fingers crossed the next couple of days. Thanks all!
