Well, thanks to a combination of finding the same model number of IPACK on ebay for sensible money, which turned out to have lower mileage (just!) than my original, and Flack being as friendly and helpful as ever, I now have a new cluster installed and the issue "appears" to have gone.
I'll need to do some longer test drives but all of the previous symptoms have disappeared. Long may it continue...Cheers,

I had a similar issue in my previous D3, see my thread in the technical section, pinned at the top. Turned out to be a wiring fault in the near side rear wheel arch.
EDIT:
I see yours is a 2007 which I believe has different wiring connection locations?!
