Compressor help please!

I have a problem with a suspension height error on my 2007 V8 Disco 3.

I get a "bong" with "suspension height error. Normal height only"

When I turn the vehicle on the compressor runs endlessly until it stops and gives an error.
If I select offroad height it goes up properly, but the compressor still runs forever until the error message bong.
If I then select normal height again the vehicle goes down, but the compressor still runs endlessly.
This morning I managed to drive away with no error appearing and the compressor stopped after about 2 mins. I then had to stop for a shorth while. I turned the car off but then after restarting again the compressor kicked in again, and then ran until the error message appeared again

Is this related to the compressor trying to fill the air reservoir tank?
It seems to raise and level the vehicle OK and never goes down or leaks.

Please help.

Andrew

Have you tried changing the relay for the compressor. I 'believe' (but please check) that the compressor relay is the same type for the heated seats, so coul dbe worth swapping?

Thanks Bodsy. No I haven't tried to replace the relay. Where would I find it? I don't have heated seats, so I guess I would have to buy a replacement unit?

Just a wild guess here, but if you are sure the system is not leaking, it then sounds like there is no feedback to tell the compressor to shut off - i.e. from a pressure switch.

Other option might be that your compressor is not running efficiently & is taking too long to refill the air-tank - & tripping out on heat overload.

No direct experience with this, but maybe some options for you to consider.

From LTB00331 - Air Suspension Relay And Air Compressor Replacement:

This bulletin has been issued to advise that when an air suspension compressor requires replacement for any reason, the air suspension relay should be replaced, due to possible damage to the relay contacts. This also applies to any compressor repair, for example the compressor delivery valve and or dryer . The old relay must be discarded. Do not re-use the old relay for any reason.

Part number YWB500220.

Just updated the software and it works ok but I still need to change the relay. In the meantime I have swapped it with the one for the heated windscreen.

I tested the suspect relay today and the contact resistance (relay energised) was 0.018 ohm. I didn’t have a new relay but the one for the heated screen was reading 0.0003 ohm. When opened, the relay contacts were clearly badly burnt and pitted.
I was measuring with a low ohm meter so there was negligible test current but at the sort of current the motor would draw this would be significant enough.

Relays are in the Engine Bay, behind the battery (under the cover at the side)

Thanks Bodsy. I'll change the relay and see if that helps.

BigJimSA I thought the same thing, but was confused that the compressor will lift the vehicle into offroad height easily, but then the compressor still runs too long??

I would think that the vehicle will be lifted by the air stored in the reservior & your compressor will only be used to pressurise same. So even though it may not be working 100%, it will still be charging the tank, albiet slowly.

I had a terminal comp problem on my previous D3, yours sounds like something else as mine would struggle to lift even to normal height upon starting & eventually the compressor failed altogether & ended up getting home on the bumpstops.

FYI, if you do end up needing a new compressor, there is now a replacement kit that LR fit - a fraction of the cost of a new compressor.

LR Durban did mine, it's basically the "guts" of the compressor from what I understand.

Can't understand why LRCT don't know about it as it was a proper LR kit.

I've also read about it elsewhere on the forum, so I'm not dreaming this Laughing

Repair kit is called a compressor overhaul kit and part number is JPO 500010.Dealer could not tell me what it contains , but since I knew a PN., I ordered it anyway. It cost $23 and what bassicly is two o rings , a few screws, a spring for a delivery, exhaust valve.I also ordered a air dryer for a compressor. Is it a good investment to replace a dryer pro actively, before it cakes up with moisture and causes a compressor to run for too long , overheat and fail .

Thanks Thorgal. I am going to get a local independent servicing supplier to fit his spare compresseor and see if it is in fact the compressor that is at fault.

Spare compressor fitted and problem is solved! Razz

I swear the vehicle feels better on the road too. The suspension feels firmer. Could it be that a lower than ideal pressure is tolerated in the system before it triggers an error code??
