Coolant temp fault

Hi guys n gals. 06 d3 2.7
Have an issue on my coolant temp. So from cold... start engine and stood running. Suddenly i get the dreaded Bong the temp guage shoots to the top and red light comes on. Ive had several things told me. From coolant level sensor fault, oil temp sensor fault in sump and what i would have thought coolant sensor fault.. please can you help by giving your input as im sure two of the three not right but i never know with these beasts.. could be all flippin 3.

Well it’s not the level sensor in tank.

Other 2 are plausible.

Do you have a code reader ?

Or buy a sensor and plug it in without fitting it and see if it’s happy

Are you sure it isn't just doing its job?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

As M3DPO says...

i have never seen a temp gauge going up in red with a faulty sensor..

faulty sensor is one that does NOT work (most of the time) i would be really alarmed..

check your waterpump and the real fluid level by eyesight.. i have seen sheered off bolts on waterpumps from LR
 Best regards

Thanks for the replies so far.
So. To clarify on some of the comments.
The sensor im guessing which ever is most definitely not just doing its job. 2 mins of engine running and physically watched it go from not moved to hot. Turned engine off immediately. Checked water level and temp physically. Level still on the mark and still cold. Checked bottom and top hoses and checked for pressurisation. I have now ordered a temp sensor as my 1st port of call as need it asap. Even if cures it i may then purchase a new expantion tank anyway
.

Expansion bottle has nothing to do with coolant temperature providing the cap fits correctly.

Yeah i was 99% sure it wasnt anythingbto do with the level sensor. But if the system is starting to have gremlins, then might as well change it. Prevention is better that cure right! And for the sake of 5 mins... 👌👍

But how difficult is the oil temp sensor to change?

Really easy, but you might as well change the oil at the same time because it’s on the back of the sump. If you have a code reader can it tell you live values of oil and coolant.
