Cracking glass roof while fitting rack

I am in the process of purchasing a roof rack - Front runner or outback - but have heard a few people have cracked their glass roof while fitting the rack? I have also been warned of this by the local LR dealer Question Is there a trick, is there something I need to be aware of? Shocked
Secondly if the roof is so likely to crack, how much is safe to load? I realise the recomended weight is 75kg, but thought this was more from a vehicle stability point of view. The Disco 2 I loaded with 150kg without any problems at all on numerous trips.

I would suggest upgrading to the FR roof rails . I carry about 120 kg on my FR no problem

If you fit the rails without the spacers then the roof will more than likley crack

Weight no issue just remember its up there when your on a sideslope

and even if you fit the spacers you can still crack the glass if its not tightened up right

This glass roof really worries me Evil or Very Mad - What is the sollution - get LR to fit the rails or is there a trick or tip someone can suggest? Once the rails are safely on, is there a risk when installing the roof rack? Is there a risk loading the roof rack and strapping the items to it - does this all add stress on the glass roof?

Ive loaded my FR rack with spare wheel, 40litres of fuel and a roof bag 18 inches high. plus me walking all over the rack and no issues. the FR rack is secured in 4 places on each side so distributes the weight evenly.

just make sure you tighten the FR rails evenly when they are fitted. They are not difficult nor will the fitting cause problems if you take your time and tighten to the recommended torque (sorry cant remember what it is Embarassed ).

I simply changed mine by calling Autoglass and they treated it the same as a windscreen replacement.
