Crank not detected on startup

Morning all,

Having just finished a shed load of work on the old shed, I went out this morning to test the new glow plugs (its -4 here) and hurrah it started perfectly... but...

I have two faults. I'm not sure if they are related but:

1) Crank not detected on startup
2) Generator field terminal voltage low

(I thought I'd screen shot them but they aren't in photos)

Crank not detected doesn't actually affect startup physically, it starts up very quickly, smoothly, hot, cold and always on 6 cylinders now. It's only occasionally, I think when battery is at its lowest.

Alternator is original, 116k, 15 years old. However before I removed body to do the work there wasn't a warning light or fault code that I ever saw on IID tool.

I also never saw the crank not detected on startup.

I have had the new cambelt off (P/O fitted just before I bought it) to remove head.
Rebuilt and and refitted LH head
Refitted cambelt (I didn't use locking tools, just marked it up, including the pulley adjustment to make sure it went back as it came off)
Fitted a new OE turbo
Blanked EGRS

And a load of other bits but not related to the engine.

Do we think this is a simple as change the old alternator and it will clear the occasional crank not detected fault? Or is there a bit of loom that has both alternator and crank sensor wires in the same part that is a common fault/trap area.

Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance!

Regarding crank not detected.
I’d probably ignore it. Maybe a bad connector under the battery or in that area

Evening Pete,

Thanks for the advice. I was out this afternoon with the spanners and whilst it was ticking over (I was changing some Voss connectors for some new ones from advancedfluidsolutions and testing them).

Smelt something funny (electrical smell), battery lights on, voltage on IID showed at 11.6 and dropping (new Varta in there a few weeks back). Then smoke started pouring out of alternator.

Pulled it out and its a very old Denso unit. Smells like the spark of its life has been smothered in poo.

Checked the main lead from it to the starter and there to the battery positive terminal and its not caught anywhere so I'm fairly sure it was the alternator at fault, not something the from the loom that shorted the alternator out. Come to think of it the lights have had a flicker to them at low revs after a cold start for a few minutes for the past six months...
