You think this will work as a retainer?

That is brilliant piece of engineering man:) it should be just fine
I am replacing the crank shaft sensor once it arrives as my start problems are intermittent

Thanks for the reassurance on TC.
I pulled the front cover yesterday to see this nonsense.
Balance shaft chain was laying on the oil pan and all guides destroyed. I am amazed I have no bent valves.

Yeap, that looks about the same as what I saw. I am surprised you were not alerted by crazy rattling during cold starts. This is when I started to look into it
Make sure you drop the oil pan (you kind of have to anyway to get to those balance shaft chain and tensioner) to check for this:
As you can see, all of the plastic remains of the tensioners plug up the oil pick up
Also here is the part number for driver side (North america) cam shaft
Another piece of advice, when you take off the flex plate/flywheel ensure that you put it back correctly. There is a procedure to follow. Something like you put 1 cylinder in TDC and place the flex plate in a special why. Otherwise, you will get a no start. Ask me how I know:)

If I were you, I would still replace the O-Ring on the TC, while you there. It is 20$ CAD here but you have to take the engine out again to do it.
That big metal plug that covers the jackshaft on the back of the engine leaked for me:( Put some silicone on that.
Obviously do the main seal, while you there.
I have done the water pump as well

I put the motor a TDC when i removed it.
I have the workshop manual to follow install.
Very nice to have resources on disco to help out these topics!

Position of the cylinders while you taking it out is irrelevant. Most likely you will spin the cam or crank as needed during timing/install. Just follow the process/procedure during the install of the flex plate

BTW, it fills good to have it running after you done. And you get good at taking the engine out. When I did it the third time it only took 2.5 hours:)

I cant imaging taking it out 3 times!!! I would have probably called the local scapper to come get it. J/k
My thought was taking it out at TDC, I would put it back at TDC to ensure correct alignment. The CKP must be timed with the notch on the flywheel and the motor I suspect.
I attached the referenced Manual for removal

That's right.
This is the video I followed to replace the cassettes and found it helpful:
and this is my video of taking the engine out:
and some of the land rover trips that I have done.
