Crazy tyres, time to change?
Just put SWMBO’s winter tyres on her car, yes I know it’s 20c out there but I had to take one wheel off to check a scraping noise so kept going.
Taking them off I noticed the summer tyres were showing a lot of crazing/cracking where the tyre meets the rim, plus cracks around the tread blocks. The tyres are date stamped 1411 so well over 9 years old but as I alternate with winter tyres seasonally they have prob been on the car for 60% of that time. When not on the car either stored in a dark(ish) garage or in the wheel well as a spare.

Most definitely, wife’s polo rear tyres deteriorated that way before they wore out - replaced. Local Indy suggested Max 6-7 year life.Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

Car tyres have been max recomended age 6/7 years for quite some time now.
Surface cracks on tyres is nowt to worry about, it is when they go deeper it is time for concern.
New laws are coming in for hgv tyres to be max age of 10 years, the problem is modern rubber simply does not last 10 years!

New tyres on order through ATS, about the same cost fitted as Oponeo and the likes just delivered. When I first showed SWMBO she immediately said “change them” so keeping them was never really an option. Virtually new winter booties fitted now, but getting the summers done now means she has a spare that’s nothing to worry about.
Oh, and it’s nice to be spending £65 a corner, fitted, rather than double that or more.

Tell me about it, though this is a cheaper way of doing it.
the tyres on my SWMBO's VX did same ... worse in fact as you could see the bits inside the rubber !
tyres were about 6 years old and very low miles ... can't remember the brand but they weren't unheard-of cheapies.
it was the guys at the MoT place that spotted it ... but they said they couldn't fail it on that as it wasn't on the list.

Will have to have a look at the tyres on my old Jazz, they’ve been on for almost 9 years now with no time in the dark of the shed or garage. Might be more spending on the horizon.
PS Mind you, might be fine for another few years as they look fine, from a pic I took a few weeks ago. Spending threat over.

Father-in-law took his Toyota Corolla in for an MOT last week.
It's a 2005 model with only 25,000 miles on it, and he's had it from new.
Although still plenty of tread left, he was advised to replace all his tyres as they were starting to perish (which he did).
Not surprising as they were the original ones.
In reality they should have been able to fail it, but they couldn't, only issue an advisory.
No joined up intelligence on some of these rules.

SWMBO’s car went through its MOT a few weeks ago with the crazed tyres on but no advisories. They’d have been off the car in a couple of weeks anyway, winter’s on its way, so would have spotted it then. Not missable when UC&P with the tyre.
I’ve just been chased out to check the Conti winter tyres I’ve just put on. Two are 2019 build but 2 are mid 2011, acquired when we bought the car in case of punctures but have been stored in the dark, both 2011s look perfect.
