D3 & D4 engine reliability

Hi all,

Brand new member so be gentle..

Surely been discussed at great length so feel free to point me to an old thread - just how widespread is engine failure on the 3.0, and is it better going for a late 2.7?

I am looking at the Commercial around the 2010 period, and very likely at the 100-130k mile price point so about £10k.. If they make it to 130k will they keep going or is it entirely cross fingers and hope....

thanks all. Tim (Shropshire)

always remember, only a small proportion of Disco owners are members on here ... loads of owners driving round who have never even considered looking under the bonnet for any reason.

As Hardware said there are lots and lots of D4's out there that have never had any major problems. There are quite a few posts on here about snapped cranks on the 3.0l D4 but do bear in mind that posts on here tend to be from members who have had/are having problems - if we are lucky enough not to have problems we don't shout about as she (the car) can hear us and that will put the kybosh on it Laughing

Have a look at different D3's and D4's, pick the one you like and good luck Very Happy

Just change your oil regularly at say 5 or 6k max - I think this should improve your odds of problem free motoring. This is my theory ..... possibly not the consensus of this forum.

Didn’t work for me. My old girl was on 6 monthly oil changes and the engine still died at 162k. When those bearings are going to spin they are going to spin. Thumbs Up

Welcome,

£10k Sounds like too much for a 2010 with over 100k miles.. I may be wrong.. but I would look around first, you may get a similar mileage D4 for the same price..

If you research hear a little you'll see that mileage doesn't really play much of a part in the crank failures..

You need luck with a Land Rover

I have had my LR3 2.7TDV6 from new with now 194k miles on the clock. I have changed many parts, but the engine and gear box are doing fine. Regular maintenance is the key and a bit of luck.
Previous Range Rovers I had were terrible, this one served me well, that's why I kept it for so long.

Changed the following in the last 70k miles besides normal servicing: Turbo, Intercooler, Air Compressor, Alternator, Front and rear diff, front and rear suspension (heavy car), Intake hose pipe duct.

Regular maintenance, maybe. Lots of thoroughly abused cars out there that lasted way part what mine did and mine wanted for nothing. Luck is the key, in bucket loads. Thumbs Up
