D3 and D4 powered tailgate / automatic boot opener

Hi All, have always been baffled why D4 and presumably the D3 has an unlock button for the boot on the fob, yet the boot does not actually open up by itself? RR and RRS have powered tailgates and I dont see why they couldnt have done this on the Disco.

In any case normally that means I have to have a go at this and try and make it happen, and was wondering if anyone else has had a go?

Obviously you could retro fit the system from the RR, but I have also seen a quicker and possibly easier method used in the tuning world, simply by putting springs on the gas struts. After all the button on the fob will unlock and release the upper from the lower all you need to do is get the strut to do its thing straight away rather than being opened 1/4 of the way by a person before it does its thing. Obviously this method would not auto close (hopefully you would have your hands more free when you want to close it) but would still auto open before you get to your car when you pressed the fob. Great to hear any views / attempts. See below:

There's a vid on YouTube with a D3 modded to open the tailgate from the remote.

I've seen one D3 with the spring mod, but he used 2 different gauge springs plus a push spring mounted on one pillar pushing outwards. The one on the D pillar was canibilised from a bonnet latch or something and had a plunger that went into a hole he had drilled into the bodywork.

It worked well and shut normally; I only helped to fit a pull-down strap so he could reach the tailgate to pull it down to close it again.

Hi robbie, tie down strap! you made me laugh, that is a lot of springs! I had also thought of a spring mounted on the main body work that pushes the upper out and gets the gas strut on its way. The youtube video does seem to be the way so need a bit more digging there. I am sure most owners would want the mod if it was available and not a fortune.

To bump and old thread here, did anyone ever look into this, tried searching but no avail...seems like maybe some kind of spring on body work to push the tailgate open that little bit along with SGS struts seems the way forward?
Any thoughts?

Looking at the video, that's just got stronger struts fitted which lift the tailgate. I doubt it would rise like that with a ladder fitted.
