depending on what else sits on the panel, you could look at stiffening from above to keep the floor as low as possible ?

Couple of productive days on the D3. Had to fit a new 12V socket in the boot as the fridge plug was too long to fit in the original socket. The boot mat has been used to keep noise down a bit but also to stop stuff sliding about. Only a week until we head south so glad it’s taking shape.
Best find was a Melvill and Moon front seat cover set from ebay. Superb quality and fit and plenty of useful pockets.

Back from Morocco and what a trip that was?! 3740 miles driven down through the UK, through Spain and through Morocco and back. Terrain varied from awesome tarmac that makes even the newest UK motorways look like green lanes to very narrow roads across the High Atlas Mountains (nearly 10K ft). We also drove through the Sahara desert which presented a fair few challenges.

The D3 took it all in its stride of course, just a short trip to the famous Garage Iriki in Zagora to have an underside tray captive nut re welded. This was after I sunk her to the wheel nuts with an incorrect sand start.

Amazing country, amazing adventure, amazing car. Word of caution though, they have defenders and Toyotas by the bucket load there but very few D3’s. When the other D3 G4 on the trip snapped a drive shaft on the Erg Chebbi dunes, its repair was only possible thanks to a Spaniard writing off his RRS near Casablanca and being able to provide a spare (put on an overnight bus btw).

As soon as I got home, I changed the air and cabin filters which we brand new before the trip but obviously worked hard during the trip!

I’d highly recommend a trip to Morocco, cheap fuel, great food and very welcoming locals.

Not much has happened with the D3 G4 recently, I’ve been working on the G4 Range Rover and Defenders. It’s partly as my downpipe flexi has a big hole in it now and I’m trying to source a replacement, not as easy as you’d think. JLR have made the part obsolete, non of the dealers have one, after market tends to be de-cat type which I’m not keen on as I don’t want to fall foul of any MOT rule.
All the aftermarket ones with cats do not fit, I’ve checked with the suppliers so if anyone has a good used one for an auto 2.7 TDV6, please get in touch 👍

Plus, I need to sort out the winking roof lights…. Think its the ballast boxes on the near side…

Fantastic Morocco trip! Thumbs Up

Find your local proper exhaust specialist who should be able to weld in a new flexible joint in your downpipe. We have a place here in Essex that will build exhausts from scratch and also do alterations so there must be somewhere up your way to do the the job.

Might have a downpipe here if you’re interested but need to check it’s actually still got some guts in there when it comes off this weekend Laughing

Morocco is worth going to!

Good shout about getting a piece welded in 👍

Since the last update, I managed to source a down pipe (aftermarket) and when that went on, so did a new front prop, both fitted by Henshall Engineering. It’s also.been throwing these codes repeatedly - P132B-22 (2C) Turbo/supercharger boost control A performance - General signal failure
P2199-22 (2C) Intake air temperature 1/2 correlation - General signal failure.
Symptoms being an “engine system failure” message on the dash when on long inclines or when I accelerate hard. Whilst it was in Henshalls, the Turbo actuator rod was a little sticky which is probably a result of the fesh fesh in Morocco. It was fine for a short while but it’s now doing it again so more investigations required.

I did manage to collect a Safety Device rack for my 110 G4 with it though!

Update on the error message, definitely not the new turbo, that operating as it should. However, the intercooler had been clogged solid with fes fes from Morocco and wasn’t doing much intercooling causing high intake temps and impacting performance. It weighed a ton and was blocked up so a new one was fitted and so far the car has returned to normal.

The D3 has been away getting a little bit of paint correction, namely the front of the roof and the bonnet as they had been suffering with lacquer peel.
Better pics tomorrow when it is back tomorrow, but here’s what I have so far.

And it’s back! Good colour match and a lovely deep finish, very pleased.

Need to wait a month before any replacement decals go on, it looks very nice without them.

I’ve been experiencing an ongoing issue which I thought had been sorted with the new intercooler. Whilst taking my wife and her colleague to the airport, pulling onto the motorway generated the dash message “engine system fault” and a reduction in power. After a quick hard shoulder switch off and on again, we were able to continue.
Took a screen shot of the code recorded at the time:

Now before you all get excited and shout turbo or actuator, the 18 month old OEM turbo and actuator was checked by my friendly independent specialist when it was having the intercooler replaced and they were declared good.

My MAP sensor isn’t that old as that was changed a while ago when the turbo had gone as was the MAF.
I’ve checked the clips on the boost hose from intercooler to intake to ensure they’re snug and that nothing else was obviously loose/split etc…

The EGR’s are mapped out and butterfly removed so I’m starting to scratch my head a little. I took these two screenshots at idle and with some revs to see if the numbers change in line with extra revs and I was wondering if you knowledgeable lot could say if they look about right or is there an obvious anomaly?

Any pointers of things to explore are welcome as I’m now starting to lose faith in what otherwise is a hugely capable and practical bit of kit.

I'm planning to do some diagnostics on my 08 G4 D3 this evening so will capture those signals on my IID and see how they compare.

I'm convinced mine is feeling a bit sluggish but no obvious fault codes. I'm wondering if it could be MAF / MAP related as I know it's not EGRs

Thanks Chris, having some values to compare to always helps.
I did an actuator log earlier today and someone on fb said it looked ok.

A spirited drive home from Asda also created the following code with the Engine System failure message:

I’m wondering if the vanes are sticking a little on the turbo? It’s only 18 months old so I’m hoping it’s not knackered as that will be terminal in terms of my ownership of this one. No point throwing money at it.

As an update on the ongoing boost issue, I got some Wynns turbo cleaner that squirts into the inlet as an attempt to rule out sticky turbo vanes. It hasn’t really made any difference.

One thing I note is when the codes are reset etc… it drives perfectly fine below 2.5K apart from returning 13>14mpg. As soon as the accelerator is pressed sufficiently to get it pulling above 3K, it pulls really strongly then detects something which I’m assuming is a boost leak and pulls back power and gives the Engine System Failure message. The actuator seems to be moving fine according to the GAP log and this is backed by it giving good boost before the ECU detects something.

The MAF looks clean and the GAP shows values that look normal, the MAP sensor is clean and not that old and seats well in the housing. All the easily accessible inlet connections seem tight etc and I’ve read the hoses going from the intercooler to the turbo rarely give bother and are slightly harder to check.

Any other suggestions on what to check/log would be appreciated. Most topics I read when searching simply don’t conclude.
