If using a kitchen sponge, the ones with the green rough side will damage the car, but the white rough side is for non-stick pans and is okay on the car if you use lightly.Matt

Just bought and used Black magic Bug & Tar sponge from Halfords. Like a big kitchen scratch pad but has the reassurance that it is also clearcoat safe.
Effective on 90% of the bugs but needs a bit of help with baked on bug guts! It will now be staying in the car for fuel stops on long bug-spattered journeys.2008.5 D3 HSE, Stornoway, Ebony

Bugs are water soluable, so I just wet them down for about 15 minutes, and they come right off. It has always worked better than the bug remover products for me, and doesn't hurt the paint.

May we have a tougher breed of bugs!
After all they have to put up with the wettest drought in ages in the UK!

Save yourselves a shed load of money. Look for the yellow dispenser with black lid marked 'Big Industrial Wipes'
I get them from a local farmers supermarket.
They are excellent at softening and removing bugs from screen and paintwork. They are non damaging and best of all, a single new clean wipe will bring up the interior trim perfectly. No shine just matt and dust free !
They will even remove dirt from leather effectively.
