D3 Tdv6 2005 not starting Just died
Hi all
Looking for a bit of advice pls
I have 2 near identical d3’s his n hers both tdv6 2005 hse 👍
Mine had a new cranksensor and magnetic ring fitted a few weeks ago due to very intermittent starting after an engine rebuild (new turbo new hp pump etc etc)and this resolved it and since has started on the button.
Started it the other day drove 40 feet to the top of my drive and it stalled and would not restart.
Plugged in iid tool and checked codes and stupidly cleared them.
Now when I try to start it cranks over fine but very low fuel pressure on live data when cranking (5 psi at valve under bonnet)
I have compared the 2 cars and both give around 4 amps for the low pressure pump and 5psi
On advice from another forum I replaced the low pressure pump (nasty job) but still get exactly the same readings.
I still get no fault codes now but she just won’t start and I really cannot afford to take it to anyone at the moment as have spent over £12000 in the last 12 months
Any help to diagnose would be greatly appreciated
I have just noticed that i have the dreaded leak in passenger side is it possible an ecu has got water in?
Can anyone confirm which ecus i could swap between my two cars for testing?

Hi
Have u checked the fuel filter seeing you’ve replaced the low pressure pump to ensure it’s ok
The more experienced members will be able to guide u better , but the filter came to mind
Believe u need 0.5 bar or 7.25psi at the shrieder valve
There’s also this excellent guide how to test the low pressure side

hi thanks
yes replaced the filter with quality Delphi one as advised.
I am confident the low pressure is good enough as both cars have the same readings and done a flow test and getting over 6 litres per min.

Hi
Thks for the info
Have u checked both ecus behind the battery , one is the transfer and other the main engine ecm , if water gets in over time the pins can go green and not make a good contact
I don’t think u can just swap over ecus between vehicles , but not 100%
Know that’s not much help to u but would rather say I’m not 100% sure so u get accurate information from the more experienced members
Have u plugged ur iid in again to see if any faults come back up , also ensuring ur battery is providing a good voltage , standing it should be around 12.6 Vdc

Although you have changed In tank pump and fuel filter (which I assume you have ensured was reconnected properly? Easy to get wrong) I would be looking at the Schrader valve again as even if there is a fuel getting there ANY air in system will prevent it firing up.. Check out my posts regarding the issue I was having where air was getting in via the valve.Have you tried getting fuel directly to injectors post valve and see if it fires? You can carefully heat with boiling water and remove pipework and pour diesel directly in.
Good luck

Hi Thanks for the responses
I am running with good battery voltage and also normally use jumpleads from other D3 running to make sure.
No faults on iid.
Have bled through 6 litres of fuel from Schrader valve no air coming through.
Have checked and connections to Fuel filter are 100% correct and get the same low pressure fuel flow from the working D3.
These are the results when cranking from both my D3's i stuggle to see what different, just the non starter wont fire.
It gives the impression it is HP pump but as it has only done 1000miles since replaement i would of hoped for at least symptoms before just dying and not restarting.

Mmmmm.. At least you have eliminated air leaks so that's a start.Do you have a second key you could try.. Just thinking immobiliser issue/flat key fob battery ?
Also check simple things like no stop light bulbs have blown and may even be worth swapping over the brake light pedal from your other D3 to eliminate that.
My other thought would be to check hp belt hasn't snapped or slipped off.. Stranger things have happened! But I would still have thought it would have at least fired up though even if it had.
Also crank position sensor could be duff.
Keep going.. Sure we will get to the bottom!

What about the new hpp and belt?
Maybe remove one metal pipe from 1 injector and see if fuel comes out at high pressure.
Be careful.
Unsure it’s poinitng into a clear container.

Hi
Thanks
The HP belt is new only 400 miles, (because the last one snapped as was incorrectly fitted)
When cranking get 600+ psi on live values
if HP pump was not running (i.e belt snapped) I would assume I would get no high pressure,
I will crank open the feed to an injector and report back.
Your intank low pressure pump has nothing to do with the pressure you are seeing when cranking it over, if no pressure when when cranking, its either the rear belt has come off, or the hpfp has failed, Or even your crank sensor has failed again.
If your getting 5 psi at the valve then the intank fuel pump is fine.
Its all controlled by the PCM so if its a connection or wire ?.

I can't help but wonder if your problem might stem from here, or somewhere on the engine harness
given it has been disturbed/removed recently!
It might be something innocuous like a connector did not go back quite right, or a cable has subsequently abraded itself somewhere!
It would be no harm to go through absolutely everything on the harness scrupulously to eliminate anything here!
It would appear from your posts you have enough high and low fuel pressure for the engine to fire. A look at the fuses might be worthwhile too.
Beyond that at this point the only other concern is whether the timing has slipped, but stick with all the basics first as you obviously have been.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Hi All
Thanks for the Advice.
Ok this afternoon I have removed and checked the Ecu's and connections all good,(loom looked like it had been thrown in behind the battery so now in correctly I hope)
Checked the loom to the gearbox (loom replaced recently misdiagnosed by incompetent Garage)
If disconnected get the HDC F faults on dashboard
Gone through all fuses (very exciting!) even checked All relays (swapped all from one vehicle to the other,
Cant get to the crank sensor connector but get an Rpm signal on iid so I assume its working (but maybe not correctly)
cracked open HP supply to injector and got a dribble when cranking,
Still no starty

so when you turn the ignition on for 30 seconds and off etc.
do you hear the noise the in tank pump makes ?
like your other D3.
If yes, could be the high pressure pump to me.
Maybe talk to the garage that fitted it.
or have a look to see if the HP pump is turning over with the engine. or at least the belt is tensioned.
