D4 18” inspiration please!
Team, I’m looking to gradually set up my 2012 Disco 4 for Overland/touring use. First port of call for me is to change to 18” wheels and robust AT tyres. I’m currently looking at the Tuffant steel option with BFG KO2, but very open to any other recommendations / personal experiences with other options such as Compomotives etc, as well as tyre selection (Eg duratracs vs KO2). Also keen to see any photos that anyone has to get an idea of how different wheels sit. I’m sure this has probably been done to death in previous posts but hey ho.. its not like anyone’s doing much at the minute so why not go round the buoy another time

I just took delivery of the tuffant 18” alloys with KO2’s, they’ve gone on tonight but not had a drive with them yet but a friend of mine is running the same ones and rates them very very highly

Regarding off road tyre size i can recommend an 18” with a higher sidewall than common on 18” pure road tyres..
I opted for the Pirelli Scorpion A/T Plus 265/65 R18 114 T
60% offroad 40% road biased And enough meat to deflate them safely if needed in muddy or sand conditions...
lower sidewall is not a good option for serious overlanding imho..
You may have to chop of an edge off the chassis in the front wheel arch on a D4 though.... there is some debate here regarding that ... on early D3’s it is NOT an issue though..Best regards

255/60/18 Pirelli AT+. The replacement for the ATR and probably a better tyre overall as tyre tech has moved on since the ATR was launched. The ATR is a good tyre, however. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Thanks for the replies so far. Do like the various alloy offerings a lot. Price is probably the main thing drawing me to the steelies at the minute.
In fairness I currently run the Scorpion AT+ in 255/55R19 and have been extremely pleased with their performance so far. Awesome on road, awesome in the Scottish winter weather, never put a foot wrong on the gravel and mud tracks they’ve been on. Just after a bit more sidewall protection really for more arduous routes. My plan is to keep my current set up for general UK driving and have the 18” wheels and tyres for big trips with tougher terrain.

It's still on Pirelli's website in some sizes. Sadly not in the usual 255/55/19 that many of us have run in the past. The 18 is shown plus a handful of other sizes. Claims to be Mercedes OEM.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Tbh i do not see the difference in sidewall protection between the scorpion A/T + (and i mean PLUS) and the suggested BFG T/A KO2. Or many other “all terrain” tyres..
If you want rock “proof” tyres, i think you need to get away from “all terrain” all together...
Crossing to mud terrain makes more sence thenBest regards

This my personal experience. I use my D3 for overlanding, green laning etc. It’s not a commuting car, so is built with this in mind.
I bought my car with the normal 19inch Pirelli setup. After getting numerous punctures when green laning, I changed the tyres to Duratracs still on the 19inch rim. These seemed ok, but after a trip to Yorkshire, I damaged all the sides walls on all 4 tyres, with 2 actually causing air to escape. Needless to say, driving with damaged side walls is not a good idea. I decide purchase the 18 inch Compomotive PD1881, and had the STT 275/65/18 fitted. These were great, with really good stability and lasted with the abuse of off roading etc. When planning a trip to Morocco, my tyres were about 60% worn, so decided to replace them due to the amount of mileage I was going to do, and given the very stony/rocky terrain in Morocco. After reading reviews I decided to fit the KO2, as these were rated quite well. I fitted 265/65/18. The car was all set and packed ready to go when these tyres were fitted, so I had a direct comparison between the K02 and STT for road driving. Driving the car for the first time, I got the fright of my life. The car was so unstable and just wallowed on the road. Even the wife picked up on it straight away. I tried all sorts of tyre pressures switching wheels to try and dial out the wallowing, and nothing worked. Even the chalk test was done. Just before we left I decide to switch them to the STT PRO, as the STT was not available. Wow what a difference. The car felt so stable and planted on the road. We had a very successful adventure in Morocco without any tyre issues.

Very interesting to hear/read the above. I have KO2’s on my 90 which I am just about to swap for STT PRO so should hopefully get a good comparison myself as well. I’ve always thought an MT tyre wouldn’t have the road manners to suit touring or overlanding but I guess that a)MT tyres have improved dramatically in their road performance over the years and b) depends how much actual off roading one intends on doing during a trip.
