Should D4 FBH run all the time?
I always thought that the FBH was there to help heat up the engine quicker on cold days and provide, if enabled, the timed and remote heating options.
I have noticed that in the recent cold weather (outside air temperature between 0c and 3c) my FBH is still running after 30+ mile journeys when the engine has easily reached normal operating temperature. This must be a waste of fuel.
Is this normal?

I thought I noticed this as well. I have only used my fbh twice for early mornings, yet today when I took it out I'm sure I could hear it running for mayber 20secs after I switched the engine off, admittedly it was cold approx. 4 C and only a short journey, but don't recall it use to do that.Now with: Tow bar & storage, Xenon's, Remote Timed Climate, Mood Lighting, Cubby Fridge, DRL's & Mud Flaps
Accessories: Rubber Mats, Spare Wheel Cover, LR Tyre Pressure Gauge, Warning Triangle, LED's throughout & Leather Gear Selector Top
Further Planned retrofits: 13 pin Tow Electrics & Heated Steering Wheel
The FBH will not just stop, after you turn the engine off it will run on for 30 seconds or so to cool down.

So is it running because it's cold (even though not requested) and then after switching off the engine it runs a cool down cycle. The FBH will run when the external temperature is below 6C if the engine isn't working hard enough to maintain it's optimum temperature. It switches off again if the engine coolant temperature gets high enough or the outside air temp is above 6C.MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added

But the engine should be hot enough without the aid of the FBH after thirty miles of driving should it not?

Not necessarily. It depends on the ambient temperature and how hard the engine has been working.
Driving in traffic or long descents don't burn enough diesel to keep the engine warm in cold weather.MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added

Possibly not if the air temperature is low enough. FFBH cuts out when the coolant reaches 75 C or the ambient temperature rises above 9 C

I had noticed the same with my FBH running on even after a reasonably long local drive, normal engine temp indicated but a very low outside air temperature. I started to think I had a FBH problem
Once again the combined knowledge and expertise of the Forum comes to the rescue

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll have to plug in my IID tool and monitor coolant temp and FBH activity (if I can) next time I go on a long drive.
