D4 holds 3rd gear
Hi. I have a late MY10 D4 and have been experiencing a gear change issue for a couple of years now. It's back with Landrover for further investigation - but no solution found yet.
The issue is that the car holds 3rd gear until around 34 mph, which makes driving in 30 speed zones frustration as it should be in 4th.
However, if before setting off, with the car in park, I just give a very rapid stab on the throttle (revs hardly even pick up, if at all) then set off the car changes up to 4th at 30 mph.
This isn't an intermittent fault. Without fail the car holds 4th gear unless you either:
1) stab the throttle.
2) stop and restart the engine after about 500 yard.
Either of the above then leave the car changing at 30 mph.
After leaving the car for 8 hours or so it reverts back to holding 3rd again until you repeat the process.
Now, LR confirm that it should be changing at 30mph but can't find a cause of the fault.
They have recently reset the adaptations but again no change.
This is all experienced under normal driving on the flat and regardless of engine or ambient temperature.
Has anyone come across this and can help with pointing in the right direction?

Is it only doing it when the car is cold ? My six speed d4 does it when it is cold , this helps warn the car up . Once the car it at temperature it changes up as normal . My friends d3 six speed also does the same.Club N.E.R.D.S

I noticed that mine would hold gears for longer than necessary when the battery was on its way out. Could it be that the charging system is telling the car to hold a lower gear to put more juice back into the battery?

Thanks for your thoughts. No doesn't appear temperature related at all and only 3rd to 4th gear has the issue. Unless you cycle the ignition or dab the throttle in neutral/part it will hold the gear.
I hadn't considered the battery being the cause, although it is the original on the car. I'll let the dealer know as its with them at the moment. Thanks

Well, following a visit from the Land Rover field technician it would appear, as you say Simons17, to be a heat cycle set by ZF to heat the gearbox oil. The issue I'm finding is that it doesn't appear to come out of the heat cycle hence just looks like it's holding 3rd gear. Even after a 40 minute journey and engine temp long stabilised it still holds the gear. Cycle the ignition or stab the throttle does end the heat cycle - which the field technician explained is expected.
The field technician is going back to ZF for clarification of how long the heat cycle should remain active.
I'd be interested to hear how long it is before other d4 six speeds revert to changing at 30 mph from 3rd to 4th after setting off. The heat cycle holds 3rd gear until around 35 mph.

Same as mine
Stick some flappy paddles on coupled with gearbox flash and you can change it yourself
can one simply add flappy paddles to an existing D4 steering wheel?

You would also need a gearbox ECU update via an IID tool, a steering wheel plastic surround with the cutouts for the flappy paddles and the short wiring loom that connects the paddles to the left hand steering wheel switch pack
