I should reiterate, I really like the look of the New Defender and if it had a lifting tailgate I'd compromise on everything else.

Oh, and to clarify, on the D5, I don't actually mind the offset number plate, looks far more LR than a central one in my opinion.

Yes, and I understand I'm making a big deal out of it and some are probably thinking I'm a being over the top about it.

But the trouble is, all I can see at the moment from here on is a step backwards.

Lady Nasher, Toby the dog, and myself got down to the beach at Hayling Island @6.15 this morning to watch the sun come up and follow the tide out onto the sand spit.
When we got back to the car we made a coffee and sat on the tailgate watching the fishing boats go out.
There was a really nice looking New Defender parked up, it maybe had a few too many external options sticking out for my liking, but looked good.
However following Nigel 207s comment about the spare wheel I took more notice of it, and it does look to stick out a bit.
Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

It’s a conundrum many of us here have faced. The fact is that any replacement for a D4 will involve compromise.

As individuals we have to decide what we are prepared to compromise on.

I wasn’t prepared to lose a functional split tail gate. With an “empty nest” I was okay going down to just 5 seats and a smaller boot area though.

Of course it’s a first world problem, but a dilemma never the less.

On reflection, what I disliked most about the D5 was the small glass area. It never felt like I was driving a Land Rover.

D4 replacement???

I concur with your ramblings of the disco 4, it's just perfect for everything and no other vehicle we have tried/bought has come close. Hence the reason for buying a late 2016 HSE lux low milage one to keep for the next 5-10 years.
drove to southern Spain vial France and Andorra in the summer. - effortless 300 miles in 3 weeks
P.S. this is SHMBO car, I drive a disco 3 HSE 2005 kitted out for agricultural breakdowns.

I suspect that 3000 miles felt like 300 - hence the typo!

Totally agree, do a few trips a year to Central Europe for holiday and to see family - you just don't feel it after 12 - 14 hours in this car. It is just the sheer versatility of the car, after blasting along the autobahn, loaded to the brim like a transit and you can then tackle cold weather conditions with snow or icey roads.

Further to my probably boring for everyone else posts on the subject of what the hell to do next with regard to an eventual replacement for my D4, I found an intriguing post on the Full Fat RR forum which could solve the issue of Range Rover rear seats not folding down far enough to create a fully flat load surface.

So I've asked for some additional information.
See my post here from 22.30hrs this evening:
https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post662336.html#662336

We'll see what comes back from it.

A small update on this.

As part of my ongoing musings about what to replace my D4 with when the time comes I've managed to get a casual look around 4 different L405s, enough to be able to put the back seats down.

All 4 were post 2017 Vogue SE or Autobiography spec.

Unbelievably all 4 finished up at different angles, and I have to say one of them was really very close to being horizontal, but with a step up from the boot floor to the back of the rear seats.

The first one was up at quite an angle, but at that point I didn't realise that if you released the button after the seat back finished moving and pressed it again the backs would fold a little further down.
Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

I think that’s intentional and mentioned in the manual with a warning about potential damage to the seats.

I have a full length Hatchbag protector and in practice its not been an issue, but of course the totally flat folding seats in the D3/4 is a superior set up.

As you know Les, you get spoilt by having the practicality and versatility of a D3/4.

Then you get hooked………

Hope you’re keeping well? Thumbs Up

I have to be honest, it is a serious contender, but doesn't have the low range transfer box which I've used plenty of times to get my boat off the beach.

Their towing capacity is also between @2,300kgs and 2,700kgs depending on the model which is really pushing it when my boat is fully loaded with fuel, diving and camping gear.

The answer maybe of course to buy a bigger boat that cannot be towed on the road without a low loader etc.
Then I would consider one really carefully, but with a bigger boat in the fleet I probably couldn't afford a newer car anyway.

Shogun LWBs and then D3s.

But as much as I loved my 2.8LWB then 3.2LWB Shoguns my first D3 showed them up in every respect except reliability.
