D4 - new battery and everything's dead

Hello.

My Discovery wouldn't start. I knew the battery was on it's way out so I got a new one from Halfords.

Swapped them today and the car is completely dead with the new one in. Sad

Everything is tight and I gave the posts and clamps a rub with emery paper.

Any ideas what the problem might be? I'm stuck. Sad

Does it do anything with the old battery attached?

That's a job for tomorrow - to charge up the old one and put it back in to see.

The car is outside and it's dark now so I've given up for the day. Sad

Not sure if the D4 has any large fuses that may have blown, worth a look Question .....I'd disconnect the new battery NOW, not tomorrow, and charge it, although it may already be damaged if you have a short in the alternator or somewhere. Charge the old battery, fit it, and see if the alternator is charging it tomorrow. Do not fit the new battery until you know that the alternator is working as it should.

Good advice Thumbs Up disconnect the battery now or you may have to buy another including a car Shocked , if you have a multi-meter or voltmeter check the voltage of both batteries, I think you may have a poor earth connection or a main fuse blown for some reason, batteries are usually checked before being sold, the chances of it being “dead” at point of sale is very rare, if you had a faulty alternator going to earth there would have been a big spark when you connected the battery terminals.
A failed earth connection or loose live connection would give the fault you are experiencing.
If you have any power in the old battery as said above use that to experiment not the new one until you have at least power showing, a faulty alternator will destroy a new battery in minutes and with a risk of fire Shocked

Don't you also have to "tell" the car it has a new battery?

There is facility to do this with the Iid tool and what type and size of battery is being fitted if it differs from the existing one, at this stage it is not crucial and would not cause the above problems. Thumbs Up

Rare yes, but it does happen. When I replaced my starter battery last october I also received a bad exide battery that was not detected by either my victron smart charger nor with a CTEK charger. After charging the battery showed around 12.6V, but when cranking, the voltage dropped to less than 10,2V - the instrument cluster of the D4 went completely blank. Evil or Very Mad Dealer replaced the battery and everything was fine.
