D4 New Front Discs and Pads Required - But Which Make Best?

My 2013 D4 Commercial is getting close to needing new front discs. They might go a while longer but as the pads are approaching changeout (at 56k miles), I might as well get the lot done in one activity.

My question: Fit LR OEM discs and pads or do we trust some of the other brands out there? I have look ed at the sponsor sites we have and there are cheap, and alarmingly some discs are really cheap!!

Can't use Java script at work (security issues associated with where I work) so the search function is very hit and miss (and today miss). I am sure I have seen this discussed elsewhere on the forum (recently).

A steer would be good please noting the OEM kit is dearer (but not by a fortune from what I can see).

Cheers.

Do a search for "shudder" and "wobble"... you will find that a few others (and me) have used the cheaper discs and in the end fitted OEM discs again... making it rather expensive school fees...

I know, I will buy and fit the OEM discs myself.

Cheers

Having been through 4 sets of aftermarket discs, I only fit Genuine discs to D4/RRS Thumbs Up

Delphi pads work well, never had an issue with them either

Just going to clarify here, as it reads to me as a bit of a muddle...

The only Bearmach discs I have had an issue with is SDB000624, D4/RRS Brembo front discs
As a result I only use Genuine

Thumbs Up

We see a few discs coming back just like any motor factor. Our main stay product line is Borg & Beck, we sell about a pallet a day of that product line, to date one set of B&B back (From a man in Warminster....you know who you are Very Happy ) So very happy with them, otherwise I tend to steer towards Brembo or TRW.

Land rover use a lot of Brembo brake discs and they use a lot of TRW other things, they are both big names in the world but whatever they choose they do not make it themselves and there isn't a special production line for them. Whatever goes into their box will also go into that manufacturers aftermarket box. TRW has just been acquired by ZF for $13.5 billion, ZF already own many brand names like Lemforder so assuming Land Rover stay connected to ZF as they are now then a lot of the chassis components are going to be coming from them.

Buying discs is a bit like buying car batteries, weight is important. I will weigh each of the alternatives later (without the packaging) and report back.

Generally, not for racing but for mainstream cars, heavier is better. A heavy disc is likely to have a higher carbon content which leads to quicker cooling, it will also have thicker disc plates each side of the venting for the same reason, cheaper discs may be the same thickness but have thinner plates and more space underneath, this doesn't make for better cooling. Also the designs of the venting within the casting can be different, some much better than others.

Most brake judders are only cured when the route issue is addressed, sometimes they might go away for a while but they will come back, if your old discs juddered look for the cause. Look at sticky caliper pistons or sliders, sometime these don't show up unless under hydraulic pressure. Also look at brake reaction suspension components. The D4 is a good example, since launch in 2009 it has had many part numbers for pads and calipers and now have all settled down to one, some with harmonic dampers on the pads - wonder why Shocked

If all else fails and you bought a dodgy disc, which sometimes happens even at the top end, how easy is it to get them replaced without much cost or hassle?

Great response thank you Bow down

I have a 400 BHP track car and as you rightly, low weight to reduce spinning mass is key. I have AP Racing discs in that and at just shy of £1k per set with floating hubs, they are far from cheap. The calipers are even more money than that Rolling Eyes

I guess the Disco likes BTH (Big, Thick & Heavy) Shocked Dustbin lids to handle the heat of stopping just shy of 3 tonnes I guess.

I will look tomorrow at what your site has to offer.

Once again, thank you.

Wow.

Stealer prices for 2013 D4 front discs and pads are astromonical Sad

LR Stealer phone quote just now.

Discs £73-78p (times two) plus VAT
Pads (a whopping) £135-00p plus VAT
Sensor Wire £17-70p plus VAT

Including the dreaded VAT that is £360-31 Sad

Compared with the Brembo/TRW set from our friends at AF being (a mere) £174-78p.

£200 difference re-focuses the mind here. Me thinks fit Brembo!
