D4: oil reading ‘below minimum level’
Hi, new user here. I read a great deal of threads prior to purchasing my D4, and now that I find myself the owner of a 2013 HSE, I have a question.
I figured how to access the oil level reading last night and after a few attempts to check I wasn’t getting an incorrect reading, the message I’m getting is ‘below mimnimum level’. It tells me to check the handbook for quantity, but I can’t find the info.
If you have just bought the car I would be very concerned. Please tell us more, where did you buy it, does it have a FSH, when was it last serviced, what mileage now etc...
Certainly don't drive, or start it, it until this issue is resolved.
I would be inclined to do a full oil change, & filter, dropping the "old" oil from through the sump plug, NOT sucking it out.
I believe that the capacity is 6.7 litres (Dry fill), or 5.9 litres for an "Oil change service".
The implication being that 0.8 litre can't be extracted by vacuum.
Changing the filter properly is critical, do it wrong & you could find yourself needing a new engine.
I suggest you spend a few hours reading threads on this topic on the forum, or get a good indy to do the job for you.

It would still need topping up before taking it some where if you don't do it yourself.

Agreed - I was assuming that Tinkertaylor1981 would get an Indy in to do the job.
On the other hand if he has recovery cover with the AA, RAC etc.. he could ask them to recover the car to his local Indy.
I forgot to say "Welcome" Tinkertaylor1981 !

Just a quick one, it is possible to access the oil level after the engine has been run and it will show it below "0", have you tried waiting 15mins with the engine off and tried to read it again?Good bye untrusted p38
Hello 15my Disco 4
Not forgotten you disco2!
Allow 10 minutes from the engine switch off for the engine oil level to stabilize.
Turn the ignition on.
10. Press the right-hand directional button to access the instrument cluster menu.
11. Press the right-hand OK button.
12. Press the right-hand directional button to access the Oil Level Display.
13. Press the right-hand OK button and follow the instructions.
14. Press the cruise control cancel button twice within 2 seconds.
15. The message center display will revert to the normal display in the trip computer.
Press the right-hand OK button and follow the instructions.
Check that the oil level display shows an oil level reading.
Take a reading from the level display and, if necessary, top up with oil as instructed.
16. Turn the ignition off.

Thanks all. I’ve followed the instructions when checking and repeatedly get the same message. Car has FSH and was serviced by the dealer prior to my purchase. I’ve spoken to them and they suggest that I should add half a litre first, then check, then possibly another litre as they suspect it has been under filled by them. They’ve offered to do it though it’d be a two hour drive and although I have the breakdown cover, i’ll add the oil myself and see what happens. It’s booked in with my own mechanic next week for front pads so I’ll get him to give it a full check over.
Next question: how do I know if my diesel is dpf???

Stupid question - but just a thought your Disco was parked on the flat and had been for a while beforehand as an incline in either plain can dramatically effect the oil level reading.

Yes, flat, up to heat, left for 10 and checked. Same reading repeatedly. I’ll try again this afternoon, and follow the procedure above to double check.
Google suggests I have a dpf - 8th letter of vin a g.

Suggest you ensure correct specification oil is used and you have a receipt for it, just in case there are any issues later on. Maybe an email to the supplying dealer confirming your discussions would be worth doing. Hopefully there wont be any issues but its worth a bit of self protection.

It will have a dpf its its a 2013 model. But check your vin here:
Car has FSH and was serviced by the dealer prior to my purchase.
In these circumstances I would have the dealer either do the work at your home, without you having to start or drive the car, or collect the car on a flat-bed, and resolve the issue.
The fact that they suspect it has been under filled by them is worrying.
